A power converter includes: a multiphase inverter circuit including multiple switching elements; multiple current sensors each of which detects a current of a respective phase of the inverter circuit; a terminal voltage detector that detects a voltage of each terminal of a load connected to the inverter circuit; a switching element drive circuit that controls the switching elements according to a switching pattern given; a fault detector that detects a fault in the inverter circuit or the current sensors; and a fault identifier that, after the fault detector detects the fault, switches the switching pattern to be given to the switching element drive circuit according to types of faults detectable by the fault detector, and identifies a type and a location of the fault based on the value of the current detected or the value of the voltage detected during the control according to the switching pattern.

To provide a controller for AC rotary machine which can detect current of the normal phase certainly when the short circuit failure of one phase occurs, in an apparatus that a current sensor is connected in series to the positive electrode side switching device or the negative electrode side switching device of an inverter. A controller for AC rotary machine, when determining that the short circuit failure of any one phase occurred, calculates voltage command values of normal n−1 phases, and changes the voltage command values of the normal n−1 phases so that on period of the detection object device of each phase of the normal n−1 phases become longer than or equal to a length necessary for current detection at least at a current detection timing.

To provide a power converter which can distribute heat generation of the switching devices with good accuracy, even when the maximum heating phase of the positive electrode side and the maximum heating phase of the negative electrode side are different phases, and even when the maximum heating phase of the positive electrode side and the maximum heating phase of the negative electrode side changes before and after combining the offset voltage. The power converter calculates the offset voltage that makes the positive electrode side maximum heating evaluation value and the negative electrode side maximum heating evaluation value coincide with each other, in a state of controlling on/off the switching devices based on the combined AC voltage commands of the offset voltage.
