The electroconductive polyurethane foam according to the present invention is obtained by adding and dispersing, in the composition constituting polyurethane foam, a substance with electron conduction mechanism, and a substance with ionic conduction mechanism and mechanically agitating the resultant mixture in the presence of inert gas. The substance with ionic conduction mechanism is an antistatic agent selected from cationic surfactant, anionic surfactant, ampholytic surfactant, and non-ionic surfactant.

An electrically conductive flexible polyurethane foam having fine and homogeneous cells, being low in swelling by water and superior in dimensional stability can be prepared by mixing an isocyanate terminated urethane prepolymer holding isocyanate monomers therein prepared by reacting polyether polyol(s) holding poly(oxypropylene) chains and not more than 30 weight % of poly(oxyethylene) chains therein with a stoichiometrically excessive amount of an isocyanate component with an aqueous dispersion of electrically conductive carbon particles containing water in excess of the stoichiometric amount necessary to react with the isocyanate monomers in the urethane prepolymer and foaming the mixture in a closed mold having a capacity smaller than the volume of a foam which can be obtained by conducting the foaming of the said mixture of the urethane prepolymer and the aqueous dispersion of electrically conductive carbon particles freely under atmospheric pressure.

Method of making an electrically conductive polyurethane foam

A method of making a foam product including the steps of reacting an isocyanate component with a polyol component and foaming with a foaming agent to form a self-supporting intermediate foam material. The isocyanate component is present in excess of a stoichiometric quantity needed to react with the polyol component. The self-supporting intermediate foam material is then contacted with water and the self-supporting, intermediate foam material is heated to form a foam product, the water reacting with the remaining unreacted isocyanate component. The self-supporting, intermediate foam material formed by the first foaming step is rigid or semi-rigid at room temperature but it can be softened by heating to enable it to be used for deep draw molding in a successive cure molding process without cracking, splitting or being destroyed. Once the self-supporting, intermediate foam material is contacted with water or steam in the final cure molding process to react the remaining isocyanate component, the material becomes a finally cured, rigid or semi-rigid foam material which will not soften on heating. The self-supporting, intermediate foam material can be laminated with facing materials or reinforced with glass fiber--non-woven cloth or the like to give a composite panel which exhibits stiffness, heat insulation, acoustic insulation, moisture resistance and is light in weight so that it can be used for a molded ceiling or door panel in an automobile or a partition or screen for interior use.

A process for producing asphalt-blended polyurethane foams which comprises introducing starting foaming materials for polyurethane foams containing a polyoxyalkylene polyol and an organic isocyanate either as respective individual ingredients or as a prepolymer into an agitation mixing chamber of a foaming apparatus, while introducing a previously heated and melted asphalt into the agitation mixing chamber of the foaming apparatus, mixing the starting foaming material for the polyurethane foams and the heated and melted asphalt and then foaming them.
