Provided is an anisotropic optical film, which can, while keeping excellent display characteristics (e.g., brightness and contrast) in the direction of a viewing angle, suppress decreased display characteristics in the other directions, when the anisotropic optical film is used as a diffusion film of a display panel. In an anisotropic optical film including two or more anisotropic light diffusion layers where the linear transmittance varies depending on the incident angle of incident light, each of the anisotropic light diffusion layers is provided with a matrix region and a plurality of pillar regions that differ in refractive index from the matrix region, the film includes, as the anisotropic light diffusion layers, at least two types of anisotropic light diffusion layers (a) and (b) that differ in linear transmittance, the maximum linear transmittance of the anisotropic light diffusion (a) is 40% or more and less than 95%, and the minimum linear transmittance thereof is less than 20%, and the maximum linear transmittance of the anisotropic light diffusion layer (h) is 20% or more and less than 40%, and the minimum linear transmittance thereof is less than 20%.

Anisotropic optical film

Provided is a display apparatus which has a sufficient luminance even when viewed at a large viewing angle, and which can overcome a problem of color change. The display apparatus is a display apparatus including a display device showing a color change in accordance with viewer's viewing angle, and an anisotropic optical film having a diffusing property changed in accordance with the incident angle of light radiated thereinto. The anisotropic optical film has at least one scattering central axis, and an angle made between the scattering central axis and a direction along which the display device shows a minimum color change is from 20 to 65&#xb0;, or &#x2212;20 to &#x2212;65&#xb0;.

The invention aims at providing a display which can improve viewing angle dependency of contrast ratio in a wide azimuth without changing design of a basic structure of a display element, impairing display quality in a direction showing large contrast ratio and being limited to a state of displaying white or black. The aim is attained by a display comprising: a display element having viewing angle dependency of contrast ratio; and an anisotropic scattering film having an anisotropic scattering layer, wherein the anisotropic scattering film has a scattering central axis approximately parallel to a direction showing the largest contrast ratio of the display element and is located on a viewing screen side of the display element.
