A method for making a thin-film semiconductor device includes an annealing step of irradiating an amorphous semiconductor thin film with a laser beam so as to crystallize the amorphous semiconductor thin film. In the annealing step, the semiconductor thin film is continuously irradiated with the laser beam while shifting the position of the semiconductor thin film irradiated with the laser beam at a predetermined velocity so that excess hydrogen can be removed from the region irradiated with the laser beam without evaporating and expanding hydrogen ions in the semiconductor thin film.

The present invention provides an optical switch for making part of incident light, which has been made incident on an optical waveguide, selectively emergent to a light emergence portion provided outside the optical waveguide. The optical switch includes a liquid crystal device for selective emergence of the incident light. An arbitrary layer of the liquid crystal device is set such that letting &#x394;n be a difference between a refractive index nof the optical waveguide and a refractive index nof the arbitrary layer of the liquid crystal device, 'd' be a thickness of the arbitrary layer, and &#x3bb; be a wavelength of the incident light, the values of &#x394;n, 'd', and &#x3bb; satisfy a condition of 2.20&#xd7;10&#x2266;|&#x394;n&#xb7;d&#xb7;&#x3bb;|&#x2266;3.03&#xd7;10. With this optical switch, the uniformity of a light emergence efficiency can be easily realized by making use of a small change region in which the light emergence efficiency is not largely varied. The present invention also provides a display unit using the optical switches.

Such a structure is to be provided in that in the case where a material, such as a protective film, is coated on a fine particle accumulated layer, such as a photonic crystal, penetration of the material into gaps among the fine particles is suppressed, whereby the mechanical strength against bending stress and tensile stress is improved, and peeling and breakage of the fine particle accumulated layer are suppressed, without adverse affect on the optical characteristics, such as reflection characteristics. The fine particle structure contains a visible light absorbing material absorbing visible light as a substrate, having accumulated thereon in this order silica fine particles having a particle diameter of 290 nm as a fine particle layer for reflecting red light, silica fine particles having a particle diameter of 240 nm as a fine particle layer for reflecting green light, and silica fine particles having a particle diameter of 210 nm as a fine particle layer for reflecting blue light, and further provided thereon a polymer layer or a gelatin layer containing a polymer having a size larger than the gaps among the fine particles. The optical medium, such as a reflective type screen, further contains a diffusion film on the polymer layer or the gelatin layer.

An information receiving/display apparatus, which can receive and display third sensory information such as tactual information or olfactory information in addition to visual and/or audio information. A number of image display optical fibers and tactual representation fibers both having cores made of a liquid are arranged in alignment, and a number of image display control signal lines and tactual representation control signal lines made of piezoelectric element are aligned across the fibers, thereby to form the information receiving/display apparatus.
