A method is provided for making a water soluble powdered formulation including a water-insoluble or difficultly-water-soluble chromogenic agent therein. The method includes first melting a water-soluble or water-miscible, heat-stable, polymeric material, e.g., PEG. The water-insoluble or difficultly-water-soluble chromogenic agent is then dissolved in such molten polymeric material. The molten polymeric material and the dissolved chromogenic agent are heated together for a predetermined period of time to provide a molten homogenate. The molten homogenate is then cooled to its solidification temperature to provide a solid homogenate. Finally, the cooled solid homogenate is pulverized to powdered form.

Water soluble powered formulation of reagent mixture containing

A device for immunological techniques is prepared containing a macroporous hydrophobic synthetic polymer cloth having antibodies or antigens directly adsorbed therein and directly absorbed and immobilized thereon. The cloth has a thickness of more than about 200 .mu.m and has spaces between fibres exceeding about 20 .mu.m in diameter, and preferably has a Frazier Air permeability, in CFM/ft.sup.2 at 0.5' H.sub.2 O of from about 215 to about 750 for thickness of from about 11 to about 40 mils such that it can accommodate a large volume of liquid per surface area, that it has a large surface area, and that it has minimum flow resistance. In immunoassays antibodies may be directly adsorbed therein and directly absorbed and immobilized thereon, and specific antigens from a selected test sample, may then be captured by the antibodies, to be detected conventionally. Alternatively antigens may be directly adsorbed therein and directly absorbed and immobilized thereon, and specific antibodies from a selected test sample, may be captured by the antigens, to be detected conventionally. This device can also be used for extraction and concentration of lipopolysaccharide antigens and for preparing biotinylated, affinity-purified antibodies.

Antibodies or antigens bound to a macroporous hydrophobic synthetic

An immunoassay device containing an immobilized antibody or antigen is provided by directly absorbing and absorbing an unmodified antibody or antigen on and within a woven or non-woven macroporous hydrophobic synthetic polymer cloth formed of a synthetic polymer selected from the group consisting of plypropylene, polyester, nylon and polyethylene. The cloth has a thickness of more than about 200 .mu.m and contains pores in the form of spaces between fibers exceeding about 20 .mu.m in diameter, and has a Frazier Air Permeability in CFM/ft.sup.2 at 0.5' H.sub.2 O of about 215 for a cloth of thickness of about 40 mils. The cloth has a large surface area for binding to an antibody or antigen and can accommodate a large volume of liquid per surface area and has minimum flow resistance. The cloth containing an immobilized antibody or antigen may be used to carry out an enzyme immunoassay by contacting the cloth with a sample containing an antigen or antibody, incubating the cloth with an enzyme-antibody conjugate and then reacting enzyme bound to the cloth with a chromogenic substrate-indicator to produce a visible color. Other immunoassay embodiments may also be carried out and a control cloth can be used such that a difference in color from that obtained with the control cloth determines the amount of antigen or antibody present in a sample.

Enzyme immunoassay with a macroporous hydrophobic synthetic polymer

A wound dressing is provided herein for systemic administration of a physiologically- or biologically-active agent by controlled release of the agent into such wound. The wound dressing includes a substrate in the form of a fabric or cloth, at least a portion of which is cellulosic, which has been chemically modified to convert hydroxyl groups in the cellulosic portion to ionic-adsorbing sites. An ionic form of a physiologically- or biologically-active agent, namely an antibacterial agent, an antifungal agent, an analgesic agent, a tissue healant agent, a local anesthetic agent, an antibleeding agent, an enzyme or a vasoconstrictor is adsorbed in that substrate. Ionic bonds hold that agent temporarily to the substrate for controlled release therefrom in proportion to the amount of exudate in contact with the substrate. The ionic bonds are formed by adsorbing that agent on that substrate at room temperature. The ionic bonds disassociate upon contact with body exudate from wounds to which the wound dressing is applied by ion exchange with ions in the body exudate, thereby to release that agent in an amount in proportion to the amount of the exudate in contact with the substrate.

Cellulosic wound dressing with an active agent ionically absorbed thereon

Novel processes are provided for the preparation of useful materials from tubers of Jerusalem artichoke or similar inulin-containing plants. In one process, a flour is prepared from such tubers which comprises the steps of: macerating the tubers to a pumpable fluid homogenate, preferably in an environment of steam; heating the pumpable fluid homogenate at a temperature ranging from about 150.degree. C. for a time ranging, respectively, from about 15 seconds to about 10 minutes; subjecting the heated, pumpable fluid homogenate to spray-drying in a stream of hot gas, and recovering a flour comprising a mixture of monosaccharides, small oligosaccharides and large oligosaccharides, e.g. about 50-60% small fructooligosaccharides and about 40-50% large oligosaccharides. In another process, a food-grade accidulant, preferably acetic acid is added, either before, during or after the macerating step to provide an acidified, pumpable fluid homogenate of such tubers. The flour recovered is sweeter than that recovered in the first described process because of the presence of more fructose therein.

Process for preparing flour from Jerusalem artichoke tubers

This invention is concerned with the selective production of ethyl acetate and acetaldehyde by microorganisms, for example of the genus Candida and of the genus Hansenula. Ethyl acetate or acetaldehyde may be produced by altering the concentration of ethanol in the medium.
