Any one of a plurality of modes such as a scanner function, a copy function, a facsimile function and the like can be set, and an operation mode of an image reading unit at the time of its image reading operation is judged. A return speed of the image reading unit for returning to a reference position after completion of the scanning is set at a speed corresponding to the operation mode. As a result, a machine sound generated when the image reading unit moves does not cause a user to feel uncomfortable, and the waiting time until the next document reading can be shortened.

In a sheet conveying stepping motor control method and apparatus, a microcomputer controls a stepping motor for intermittently conveying a sheet in different manners for high-speed, low-to-intermediate speed and fractional conveyance, using a motor driver capable of selecting a motor excitation current from values of high, intermediate and low levels. For the high-speed conveyance, the stepping motor is driven by two-two phase excitation with step-up and step-down control. The excitation current is set to the intermediate level during the initial step, and then to the high level during the later steps, and then to the low level during the final step. For the low-to-intermediate speed conveyance, the excitation is performed by self-start driving. One-two phase excitation is performed during the initial step and the final step, and two-two phase excitation is performed therebetween. The excitation current is set to the high level during the one-phase excitation in one-two phase excitation, and to the intermediate level during the two-phase excitation. The excitation period in one-two phase excitation is longer than that in two-two phase excitation. For the fractional conveyance, the motor is driven by one-two phase excitation. The excitation current is increased in three steps during the initial one-phase excitation period, and in two steps during the later periods. During the final two-phase excitation period, the excitation current is reduced from the intermediate to low levels. The excitation period by the low current during the final two-phase excitation is relatively long.

Motor controlling method and apparatus

A stepper motor controller that controls acceleration of a stepper motor so that, once the stepper motor is stabilized at 500 pps, acceleration of the motor is increased to 667 pps for four steps, during which time the speed of the stepper motor reaches about 900 pps. Then, acceleration of the stepper motor is increased to 1,000 pps, allowing the motor to increase to that speed without degeneration of the speed. In other words, when the stopper motor nears the maximum possible speed at an acceleration of 667 pps, the next acceleration is applied. In this way, acceleration of the stepper motor can be changed between levels having a great difference in driving frequency without causing the stepper motor to degenerate.

A thermal transfer printing mechanism for use in a facsimile device includes a separating guide surface that is formed having a curve having a radius of curvature of not more than 1.2 mm. Consequently, the acceleration in a separating direction of an ink film separated from an image receiving sheet by the separating guide surface is increased, and the ink film is smoothly separated from the image receiving sheet. The separating guide surface may be formed as a bent thin plate, an embossed portion, a deformed edge of a supporting member, a plastic attachment, or a plastic tape. The separating guide surface is formed as a curve continuing from a feeding guide surface, and the feeding guide surface bends the sheet and the ink ribbon from a plane connecting a contact line of a thermal head and the ink ribbon and a contact line of the sheet and a sheet guide member provided downstream of the separating guide surface.

This invention provides a composition useful for diagnosing cancer which specifically recognizes a galactosyl-globoside. Preferably, the composition is a monoclonal antibody which specifically recognize the galactosyl-globoside antigen, gal-Gb4. Additionally, the present invention provides two hybridoma cell lines, designated J309 and D579, which produce monoclonal antibodies that specifically recognize gal-Gb4. The invention also provides a method of diagnosing a carcinoma which comprises contacting a sample from a human subject with a composition which specifically recognizes a galactosyl-globoside antigen and is labeled with a detectable moiety, under suitable conditions so as to form a detectable complex. Another aspect of the invention provides a method of treating carcinoma which comprises administering an effective amount of galactosyl-globoside or an analog thereof and a pharmaceutically carrier to stimulate the body production of antibodies.

This invention provides a monoclonal antibody, produced by the hybridoma cell line designated GXM1, which specifically binds to a human class 1tumor antigen. This invention also provides a human monoclonal antibody, produced by a hybridoma cell line designated HJM1, which specifically binds to each of the ganglioside antigens GD2, GD3, GM3 and GD1b. This invention further provides a human monoclonal antibody, produced by a hybridoma cell line designated FCM1, which specifically binds to the ganglioside antigens GM3 and GD1a. Finally, this invention provides a human monoclonal antibody, produced by a hybridoma cell line designated DSM1, which specifically binds to a human class 2 tumor protein antigen.
