An arrangement for controlling a two-cycle marine engine having a fuel injection system wherein the firing frequency of the cylinders is reduced under low speed running so as to improve fuel economy and engine performance by improving scavenging while the firing intervals between the cylinders is maintained uniform. The invention is disclosed as being applied to a number of variations of multiple cylinder engines and may be employed with spark ignited or diesel engines since the ignition system of the engine per se is not affected.

Two-cycle motor having a fuel injection system for marine propulsions

A number of embodiments of combustion chamber configurations for internal combustion engines as applied as power units for outboard motors. In each embodiment, the combustion chamber comprises a main open volume in which combustion is initiated and into which fuel is discharged by a fuel injection nozzle. An energy cell, of smaller volume, is disposed so as to receive some of the fuel discharged by the injection nozzle and for creating combustion at the end of the combustion cycle to cause a pressure increase that discharges a hot charge into the main combustion volume for completing combustion. The energy cell is formed from a ceramic material. Both two and four-cycle applications and variations of combustion chamber configurations are disclosed.

Internal combustion engine

An ignition system spark timing controller having circuits for advancing the time at which the ignition system will produce a sparking potential during the starting of the engine, and for maintaining this advanced spark time for a predetermined time period after the engine has started when the temperature of the engine is below a predetermined temperature level during the starting of the engine. The spark timing controller also includes a circuit for advancing the time at which the ignition system will produce a sparking potential when the speed of the engine is below a predetermined speed level after the engine has started.
