A system for controlling the air-fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine provided with a fuel injector. The system has an O.sub.2 sensor for issuing signals on two levels, one corresponding to a high air-fuel ratio, the other to a low air-fuel ratio, and a feedback control device responsive to the signal from the sensor. The feedback control calculates a correction factor for maintaining the air-fuel ratio to a desired value during steady operation and for indicating the deviation in the ratio from the desired value during transient conditions. This deviation is employed to generate a transient correction value which is selected to minimize the deviation during transient conditions.

In an internal combustion engine, a base fuel amount is calculated, and an air-fuel ratio deviation for each region is determined by a predetermined engine operating parameter when the engine is in a transient state such as an acceleration state or a deceleration state. A method for controlling the air-fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine in which the correction value of a transient fuel injection amount is decided, at a predetermined interval, in accordance with the acceleration or deceleration state of the engine, and the amount of fuel injection supplied to the engine is corrected by the decided correction value. In the process of the correction, the deviation of the air-fuel ratio from a reference air-fuel ratio in acceleration or deceleration of the engine is detected, and the correction value of the fuel injection amount correction in the transient state of the engine in accordance with the detected air-fuel ratio deviation is determined. An automatic painting system has a painting booth composed of a partition having side walls, a ceiling, and a floor which jointly define a working space isolated by the partition from exterior space for accommodating a workpiece to be painted in a position therein. The partition has air inlet and outlet ports opening into the working space. A movable painting mechanism such as a robot paint spray gun is disposed adjacent to the workpiece position and controlled by a control unit disposed outside of the painting booth and including a robot drive source. The control unit and the movable painting mechanism are interconnected by an arm accommodated in an arm housing extending through the partition with a sealing member hermetically sealing a gap between the arm housing and the partition. A door is mounted on the partition in the vicinity of the workpiece position for transfer of the workpiece into and out of the painting booth.

A helically-shaped intake port comprising a helical portion and an inlet passage portion which is tangentially connected to the helical portion and extends so as to be slightly curved. The intake valve is arranged at the outlet open end of the helical portion. The first side wall of the inlet passage portion, which is located near the axis of the intake valve, has on its upper portion an inclined wall portion which is arranged to be directed downwards. The inlet passage portion has an open inlet end formed on the flat side wall of the cylinder head. The inlet passage portion is so arranged that the longitudinal axis thereof obliquely intersects with a straight line passing through the center of the valve head of the intake valve and extending parpendicular to the outer side wall of the cylinder head. The inlet end of the inlet passage portion is arranged at a position remote from the straight line so that the inlet end does not include the straight line.

A throttle valve is positioned at the entrance to a swirl type of suction passage near to the corresponding intake valve of a cylinder in an internal combustion engine. The valve is designed so that when it is opened only slightly (e.g. 30.degree.-40.degree.), the flow of intake gas passing therethrough converges to flow eccentrically along one side of the suction passage. This arrangement provides full control of the intake gas in the suction passage before it reaches the combustion chamber, even when the volume of flow is small, thereby producing an effective swirl within the combustion chamber for all operating conditions of the engine.

A multi-cylinder engine comprising a carburetor housing forming therein at least two branch mixture passages. Each of the branch mixture passages is connected to a respective intake port.
