An internal combustion engine is equipped with a cylinder block having a plurality of cylinders and an in-block water jacket, a cylinder head having an in-head water jacket, and a head gasket. The in-block water jacket includes a plurality of cylinder outer peripheral portions. The head gasket includes a plurality of coolant opening portions. The internal combustion engine is configured such that coolant sequentially flows through the cylinder outer peripheral portions along a cylinder bank direction in the in-block water jacket. The head gasket includes one or a plurality of dam portions provided, in such a manner as to block the flow of coolant, at a position downstream of the coolant opening portion corresponding to the cylinder outer peripheral portion located at least most downstream in an in-block coolant flow direction.

Internal combustion engine

A water jacket of a cylinder block includes a main passage and a sub-passage. The main passage is formed along the periphery of a cylinder bank, and extends between a plurality of head bolt bosses and the cylinder bank. The sub-passage is formed at a position spaced from the cylinder bank farther than the main passage, to diverge from the main passage at a first position, and join the main passage at a second position downstream of the first position. A first head bolt boss by which coolant flowing from a coolant inlet initially passes is interposed between the main passage and the sub-passage. The first position is located between the first head bolt boss and the coolant inlet. The second position is located between a second head bolt boss by which the coolant passes next, and the first head bolt boss.

Cylinder block

An internal combustion engine has a plurality of cylinders and transmission arranged adjoining the engine. If designating an average height of a combustion chamber in a region inside from a virtual cylindrical surface passing through center of a valve body of an intake valve and extending in a circumferential direction of each cylinder when a piston is at top dead center, as 'center height', and designating average of a height of the combustion chamber in a region outside from the virtual cylindrical surface when the piston is at top dead center, as 'peripheral height', the combustion chambers form a center height of a transmission side cylinder positioned most to the transmission side among the plurality of cylinders is higher than center heights of usual cylinders including one cylinder other than the transmission side cylinder and a peripheral height at the transmission side cylinder lower than peripheral heights of usual cylinders.

A cylinder structure includes cylinders arranged inline. A cooling channel facing a first side wall of the cylinder structure includes a first inner channel and a first outer channel. The first inner channel is arranged for a first cooling medium to flow through. The first outer channel is away from the first side wall than the first inner channel is, and arranged for a second cooling medium to flow through. A cooling channel facing a second side wall of the cylinder structure includes a second outer channel and a second inner channel. An upstream part of the second outer channel is connected to a downstream part of the first outer channel. The second inner channel is close to the second side wall than the second outer channel is. Connection channels connecting between the second outer channel and the second inner channel are respectively provided at positions facing the cylinders.

A connecting rod of an example in the present disclosure is divided into a rod body and a cap at an oblique division at a large end, the rod body and the cap fastened by bolts. The connecting rod includes a joining plane and first and second restricting parts. The joining plane is a flat joining surface parallel to the division surface of the large end and is formed on at least one of two abutting portions on which the rod body and the cap join. The first and second restricting parts restrict lateral deviations of the rod body in first and second directions with respect to the cap, respectively. The first and second directions are opposite directions. Each of the first and second restricting parts restricts the lateral deviations by a single set of first or second opposing surface provided between the rod body and the cap.

Connecting rod

An engine including an intermediate shaft which is driven by the crankshaft and drives the camshaft. The intermediate shaft directly drives an oil pump arranged above the trans-axle and drives an alternator and compressor through a pulley connected to the intermediate shaft and a belt. The intermediate shaft is arranged shifted in the lateral direction from the plane containing the axes of the cylinders.
