Described are a biodegradable sustained-release preparation which comprises a mixture of 99 to 10 parts by weight of an aliphatic polyester and 1 to 90 parts by weight of a modifier for the regulation of sustained releasability of an active ingredient, and the active ingredient held by said mixture; a biodegradable pheromone dispenser, wherein an aliphatic polyester is used as a sustained release layer for a pheromone contained therein as a liquid phase, said aliphatic polyester having recurring units whose ratio (I/II) of (I) the number of the carbon atoms constituting the main chain and not relating to ester linkage to (II) the number of the carbon atoms constituting the ester linkage is 2 or larger; and a biodegradable pest controlling agent which is obtained by mixing and dispersing an active ingredient and a carrier for holding said active ingredient in a biodegradable aliphatic polyester or which comprises 2 to 60 wt. % of an active ingredient, 30 to 95 wt. % of a biodegradable aliphatic polyester and 2 to 50 wt. % of a carrier for holding the active ingredient.

A sustained release pheromone-containing preparation is obtained by incorporating a sex pheromone having a heat of evaporation ranging from 21,000 to 27,000 cal/mole and a parameter, as a measure for the solubility, ranging from 8 to 9 cal.sup.1/2 cm.sup.-2/3 into powder of a synthetic resin, whose parameter, as a measure for the solubility, ranges from 8 to 9.5 cal.sup.1/2 cm.sup.-2/3, having an average particle size ranging from 0.2 to 2.5 mm. The sustained release pheromone-containing preparation can be sprayed using a widely used spraying machine and can release the sex pheromone at an almost constant concentration over a long period of time.

Herein disclosed is a sustained release dispenser capable of uniformly releasing a volatile liquid ingredient over a long time period even when the amount of the liquid ingredient remaining in a container is reduced. According to an embodiment, the sustained release dispenser comprises a plastic container 4 having a liquid and volatile ingredient-permeable outer layer 1 and a liquid-absorbable inner layer 3 having the same material as those of the outer layer 1 and a liquid and volatile ingredient 2 enclosed in the plastic container. According to other embodiment, the sustained release dispenser comprises a plastic container 6 in which grooves 5 are formed on the inner wall and a volatile ingredient 2 accommodated in the container 6. According to other embodiment, the sustained release dispenser comprises a bag formed from a liquid permeable film 7 provided with a highly wettable film 8 on the inner surface thereof and a liquid sex pheromone 9 accommodated in the bag.

Described is a process for easily preparing an .alpha.-bromo,.omega.-chloroalkane which is high in purity represented by the formula: Br(CH.sub.2).sub.n Cl in which n stands for an integer of 4 to 12. The process comprises reacting in an organic solvent an .alpha.,.omega.-dichloroalkane with an .alpha..omega.-dibromoalkane. As the organic solvent, an aprotic nitrogen-containing or sulfur-containing organic solvent having a dielectric constant at 20.degree. C. of 20 or larger, for example, N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide or N,N-dimethylimidazolidinone is preferred.

A novel and very effective method is proposed for the stabilization of a higher aliphatic compound having at least one double bond in a molecule such as the sex pheromone compounds of agricultural pest insects used for the elimination of the pest insect by the method of mating disruption. The method comprises admixing the sex pheromone compound with each a specified amount of (a) a specific phenolic compound, e.g., tert-butyl hydroquinone, di-tert-butyl hydroquinone, di-tert-amyl hydroquinone, di-tert-butyl p-cresol, methyl hydroquinone and p-methoxy phenol, as an antioxidant and (b) 2-(2'-hydroxy-3'-tert-butyl-5'-methyl phenyl)-5-chloro benzotriazole in combination.

A novel aqueous coating composition is proposed for providing enteric coating on solid dosage forms such as tablets. The aqueous coating composition of the invention comprises a fine powder of an enterosoluble cellulose derivative such as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose phthalate and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate, which is insoluble in water but can be plasticized and solubilized with certain plasticizing agents, as dispersed in an aqueous dispersing medium and a plasticizing agent having compatibility with the enterosoluble cellulose derivative and dissolved in the aqueous dispersing medium. The particle size of the enterosoluble cellulose derivative and the boiling point of the plasticizing agent is the key parameters and should be finer than 100 .mu.m in an average particle diameter and not lower than 100.degree. C., respectively. Upon application of the aqueous coating composition to the solid dosage forms, water as the dispersing medium is first evaporated leaving the cellulose derivative and the plasticizing agent, which latter solubilizes the former to form a continuous coating layer on the solid dosage forms imparting good and satisfactory enterosolubility thereto.

The present invention provides a novel compound cyanoethylpullulan which is a cyanoethylation product of pullulan. Pullulan is readily cyanoethylated by the reaction with acrylonitrile in the presence of an alkali catalyst such as sodium hydroxide. The cyanoethylpullulan having a degree of cyanoethylation of at least 50% has various unique properties in the heat resistance, solubility in organic solvents, film-forming property, adhesive bonding to metals and the like in comparison with related cyanoethylated products such as cyanoethylcellulose and cyanoethylated polyvinyl alcohol.

In the process for the preparation of low-substituted cellulose ethers comprising the successive steps of etherification of alkali cellulose, neutralization of the crude cellulose ether, washing, drying and pulverization, the neutralization step is carried out in two stages, i.e., by first employing 5 to 80% of an acid stoichiometrically required and then adding an additional amount of the acid to complete neutralization. The cellulose ethers thus prepared can readily be pulverized into fine powder having a very good flowing property and yet an excellent binding force, and work as a suitable disintegrator in tablets.
