A multi-cylinder piston type compressor having an axially extending cylinder block with cylinder bores formed therein and closed on at least one axial end by a housing defining therein suction and discharge chambers and provided therein with a reciprocative piston mechanism for drawing, compressing, and discharging a refrigerant gas. The compressor also has a valve plate member arranged between the cylinder block and the housing for defining therein suction ports and discharge ports, a suction valve sheet member defining therein suction valves openably closing the suction ports and discharge apertures for introducing the refrigerant gas after compression from the cylinder bores into the discharge chamber of the housing via the discharge port of the valve plate member. The compressor also has an internal pulsation and noise suppression unit provided by extensions formed in the suction valve sheet member and adjacent to the discharge ports of the valve plate member.

A piston type compressor having a cylinder block in which a plurality of compression chambers permitting a plurality of pistons to be reciprocated so as to compress a refrigerant gas pumped from a suction chamber formed in an end housing into the compression chambers through suction ports of a valve plate, openably closed by a suction valve mechanism with a plurality of suction reed valves, and to discharge the compressed refrigerant gas from the compression chambers into a discharge chamber formed in the end housing through discharge ports of the valve plate, are openably closed by a discharge valve mechanism having a plurality of discharge reed valves. The suction and discharge reed valves of the suction and discharge valve mechanisms are prevented from undergoing complicated and irregular vibrations by an asymmetrical arrangement of the suction and discharge ports of the valve plate, or by provision of asymmetrical through-openings to adjust mechanical flexibility to the suction and discharge reed valves for both reed valves.

A swash plate type compressor having a plurality of double-headed pistons reciprocating in axially extending cylinder bores of a cylinder block unit for compressing refrigerant gas, in which refrigerant gas returning from a refrigerating circuit is initially introduced into a swash plate chamber enclosed by a pair of axially opposed planar walls and a substantially cylindrical wall of the cylinder block unit, and is circularly flown along a pair of circular refrigerant passageways formed in both planar walls of the swash plate chamber before being drawn into the cylinder bores so that a circularly flowing refrigerant gas lubricates moving elements, such as shoes and radial and thrust bearings, of the compressor.

A piston type compressor having a cylinder block in which a plurality of compression chambers permit a plurality of pistons to be reciprocated so as to compress a refrigerant gas pumped from a suction chamber formed in an end housing into the compression chambers through suction ports of a valve plate, openably closed by a suction valve mechanism with a plurality of suction reed valves oscillatorily movable with regard to two bearing points, respectively, and to discharge the compressed refrigerant gas from the compression chambers into a discharge chamber formed in the end housing through discharge ports of the valve plate, openably closed by a discharge valve mechanism having a plurality of discharge reed valves oscillatorily movable with regard to two bearing points, respectively. The suction and discharge reed valves of the suction and discharge valve mechanisms are prevented suffering the effect of complicated and irregular vibrations by an asymmetrical arrangement of the suction and discharge ports of the valve plate with regard to bisectors perpendicular to lines connecting the respective two bearing points.

A swash plate type compressor comprising a swash plate and a plurality of double headed pistons reciprocatingly moved by the swash plate through a shoe-and-socket joint. The shoe and socket are shaped in a mating semi-spherical convex and concave configuration which has a center of curvature which is offset from the axis of the piston circumferentially of the swash plate to mitigate the swinging motion of the pistons and decrease the noise of the compressor.

A shoe-and-socket joint, which is incorporated into a swash plate type compressor as a drive force transmitting unit arranged between a rotational swash plate and each of a plurality of reciprocal pistons, has a shoe provided with a spherically formed contact face and a recessed curved socket, for example, an ellipsoidal socket, deviated from a spherical form. Therefore, there is provided a wedge-shaped clearance between the socket and the shoe. An oil containing refrigerant gas flows enough into between the socket and the shoe to achieve a good lubrication.

A piston type compressor having a cylinder block in which a plurality of compression chambers permit a plurality of pistons to be reciprocated so as to compress a refrigerant sucked from a suction chamber formed in an end housing into the compression chambers through suction ports of a valve plate openably closed by a plurality of suction reed valves. The compressor also has a valve stop construction for stopping the movement of the suction reed valves when the valves reach the opening position thereof apart from the valve plate. The valve stop construction includes recessed seats formed in an axial end face of the cylinder block so as to permit a portion of the free end of respective suction reed valves to be first seated on the recessed seats, and to permit the remaining portion of the free end of the suction reed valves to be stably seated on the recessed seats. The gradual stoppage of the suction reed valves suppresses vibration of the valves and prevents noise.

A shoe-and-socket joint, which is incorporated into a swash plate type compressor as a drive force transmitting unit arranged between a rotatable swash plate and each of a plurality of reciprocal pistons, has a shoe provided with a spherically formed contact face having a radius R2 and a spherically formed socket recessed in each of the pistons and having a radius R1, the radius R1 being 20 to 150 microns larger than the radius R2, to provide a clearance between the shoe surface and the surface of the socket into which an oil-containing refrigerant can flow to lubricate the shoe surface and the surface of the socket.
