The present invention relates to a payback system and a payback method for calculating a payback value to a customer receiving a service by using a product provided (for free or payment) from a product manufacturer or a middleman, or to the middleman. The payback value is calculated based on the use results of the service (including a service on a network) by a product user.

A terminal management device manages the sharing by at the least one business entity of costs related to distributed terminal devices. In a case that a new business entity, which uses the terminal devices and provides services after the terminal devices have been distributed, the terminal management device computes and totals the differences of shared costs of each business entity, which will change in accordance with the addition thereof. Thus, by managing the changes of a plurality of business entities bearing the costs related to terminal devices, changes in the shares of the costs thereof can be adjusted easily even in a case that business entities using the terminal devices thereof and providing services change after the terminal devices have been distributed to subscribers. An identifier managing device is used in a software distribution system in which software programs are distributed to distribution terminals from a distribution center through a network, for managing information including identifiers of the distribution terminals. A host computer in the distribution center sells the software programs corresponding to the request from users at the distribution terminals, each of which is assigned a terminal identifier and a terminal password. Each of the users is assigned a user identifier and a user password. A distribution identifier is written in the software programs before the software programs are sold, and the host computer manages the history of the distribution of the software using these identifiers and the passwords. The terminal password is rewritten whenever the terminal accesses the host computer for preventing illegal duplications of the software programs at the users end.

Remote installation system and method for enabling a user to obtain any software through a communication line and automatically install it without taking a long time and requiring labor. A host computer transmits first and second key tables and to a terminal and a display displays keywords, included in these tables on a screen. The user selects keywords, which correspond to his target software, on the screen and the host computer sends a list of software, which corresponds to the keywords he selected, to the terminal. He selects his target software prom the list which is informed to the host computer. The host computer selects it from a software group and stores it on a hard disk of the terminal through a communication line, after checking its operation circumstances using a circumstance file. It is automatically registered in the system and its drive icon is displayed in a storage window. A sub-directory for a distribution destination is automatically created corresponding to the selected software thereby reducing the user's workload.

Remote installation system and method

A terminal system having a video telephone equipment and a computer system. The video telephone equipment includes a communication unit connected to a line; a telephone unit for communicating with a remote station by speech via the communication unit and the line; and a camera unit for taking pictures and outputting video signals corresponding to the pictures. The video signals are transmitted to the remote station via the communication unit and the line. The video telephone equipment further includes a display unit for displaying images; and a processor for controlling the communication unit, the telephone unit, the camera unit and the display unit. The communication unit, the telephone unit, the camera unit, the display unit and the processor unit are coupled to each other by a first bus. The computer system includes a processor, coupled to an external unit by a second bus, for processing data supplied thereto via the second bus. The terminal system includes an interface circuit, coupled to the first and second buses, for intermediating between the video telephone equipment and the computer system so that data is transmitted from the computer system to the video telephone equipment via the interface means and vice versa.
