In an occupant detecting apparatus for detecting an occupant seated on a passenger seat of a vehicle with an airbag for the occupant, a load sensor is provided in a bottom part of the seat. A plurality of first electric field sensors are provided in the bottom part of the seat, and a plurality of second electric field sensors are provided in a rear part of the seat. An airbag inflating permission control unit permits inflation of the airbag in accordance with output signals of the load sensor and the first and second electric field sensors.

Occupant detecting apparatus capable of improving detection accuracy

An exhaust gas purifier for a diesel engine is positioned in the middle of an inlet system for supplying air to a combustion chamber. The exhaust gas purifier includes an HC (hydrocarbon) supply source, and a zeolite catalyst converter, which is activated by the hydrocarbon as a reduction agent to crack NOx (oxides of nitrogen) in the exhaust gas, for thereby purifying the exhaust gas.

The disclosure relates to a novel arrangement of a combustion chamber for diesel engines, which is defined by an inner wall including a fuel-impinging area formed of a metallic material, and a remaining area which at least partly is formed of a ceramic material or a like heat-resisting material. The arrangement serves to achieve an effective exhaust gas clarification, including the minimization of NOx emission, and to realize increased power output and reduced fuel consumption of the engine.

A direct injection-type diesel engine includes a piston head formed with a novel piston combustion chamber, with an inner wall surface composed essentially of ceramic material having a low thermal conductivity. The combustion chamber has a reduced opening diameter to enhance a squish air flow out of the clearance space between the piston and the cylinder head, and allows significant reduction of smoke, unburnt hydrocarbon and particulates in the exhaust gas, as well as minimization of thermal loss of the engine.

A heartbeat rate indicator has a detection electrode on the surface of the housing such as a wristwatch case and the element of a circuit-input portion in which the existence of a switch connected to the detection electrode prevents the element from destroying with electrostatic charge produced at the moment of touching the detection electrode with the human body, the clothes or the like. Because in the non-depression state of the detection electrode, the detection electrode is connected elastically through the switch to one terminal of a power source so that the electrostatic charge produced at the moment of touching the detection electrode with the human body discharges to the one terminal of the power source.
