The blood flow channel sections of an oxygenator and a blood resevoir are hydrophilized by treatment with an acid, an albumin solution, polyhydroxy methacrylate, corona discharge, plasma or ozone, so that it has highly improved weltability by the priming liquid and the blood to prevent blood foaming. The blood flow channel sections of a medical instrument may be additionally hydrophilized by treatment with a polymer containing hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate or in addition thereto a poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxypropylene) block polymer.

The blood flow channel sections of an oxygenator and a blood resevoir are hydrophilized by treatment with an acid, an albumin solution, polyhydroxy methacrylate, corona discharge, plasma or ozone, so that it has highly improved wettability by the priming liquid and the blood to prevent blood foaming. The blood flow channel sections of a medical instrument may be additionally hydrophilized by treatment with a polymer containing hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate or in addition thereto a poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxypropylene) block polymer.

The present block copolymer contains a structural unit (A) derived from a compound represented by the general formula (I): CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.1 COOR.sub.2 R.sub.f, and also contains a structural unit (B) consisting of a polymer moiety represented by at least one of the structural formulae (III) and (IV) and another polymer moiety derived from a compound represented by the general formula (II): CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4. For preparing the above block copolymer, a block copolymer consisting of the structural unit (A) derived from a compound represented by the general formula (I): CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.1 COOR.sub.2 R.sub.f and the structural unit (B1) derived from a compound represented by the general formula (II): CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 and a compound represented by the general formula (V): CH.dbd.CR.sub.6 COO(R.sub.9).sub.t H are reacted with a compound represented by the general formula (VI): R.sub.10 COCl to allow a dehydrochlorination reaction to take place. Thus, an unsaturated group and fluorine containing block copolymer having excellent water and oil repellent properties and excellent sensitivity to activation energy rays can be prepared. An ultraviolet curing antifogging agent is disclosed. The composition includes block copolymer (a) having a hydrophilic polymer segment (a1) and a hydrophobic polymer segment (a2). A polar solvent (c) is provided in which the hydrophilic polymer segment (a1) can easily be dissolved while the hydrophobic polymer segment (a2) can not. It further includes a photopolymerizable compound (b), and a photopolymerization initiator (d). The block copolymer (a) contains at least one hydrophilic monomer selected from the group of: a (meth) acrylamide compound represented by the general formula: CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.1 CONR.sub.2 R.sub.3 ; a cyclic (meth)acrylamide compound represented by the general formula ##STR1## and a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate. Further, the hydrophilic polymer segment (a1) is formed by a radically polymerizable monomer having a functional group such as glycidyl group. The hydrophobic polymer segment (a2) is formed by a radically polymerizable monomer and a hydrophobic monomer which is copolymerizable with the former radically polymerizable monomer. The weight ratio of the hydrophilic polymer segment (a1) to the hydrophobic polymer segment (a2) is 50/50 to 95/5. The photopolymerizable compound (b) can be represented by the general formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR.sub.1 COO(CH.sub.2 CR.sub.4 HO).sub.n OCCR.sub.1 .dbd.CH.sub.2. The weight ratio of the component (a) to the component (b) is in the range of 10/90 to 90/10 in terms of the solid content. Such compositions have excellent antifogging properties and can be applied to transparent plastic materials to prevent fogging.

An anti-fogging resin film-forming composition, comprising a block or graft copolymer and a surfactant, each of which block and graft copolymers consists of a hydrophilic polymer segment and a hydrophobic polymer segment having specifically limited monomer compositions, is disclosed. A coating film formed on a matrix surface from the composition has a durable excellent anti-fogging property and having high adhesion to the matrix surface and high strength.

The surface of a polymer material is modified by adding to the material a block copolymer. The block copolymer has a hydrophilic polymer portion and a polymer portion which is compatible with the polymer material to be modified. The block copolymer can be easily synthesized in the presence of a polymeric peroxide and can easily and permanently modify the surface of the polymer material.

Method for modifying the surface of polymer materials

A specialized polymeric peroxide is copolymerized with vinyl type monomers in the presence of organic liquid, thereby obtaining a solution of a copolymer having peroxy bonds therein. This solution is admixed with vinyl type monomers which are different in composition from the ones used in the first copolymerization, and the resultant mixture is subjected to block copolymerization. The obtained block copolymer solution is admixed with an organic liquid which exert solubility to one of polymers of the vinyl type monomers which are employed in the first or second copolymerization, whereby a non aqueous system liquid dispersion is obtained. This dispersion contains a block copolymer in a high concentration and it also is splendid in uniformity of dispersion and dispersion stability.

Process for preparing a non-aqueous liquid dispersion of polymer made

The surface of a polymer material is modified by adding to the material a block copolymer. The block copolymer has a hydrophilic polymer portion and a polymer portion which is compatible with the polymer material to be modified. The block copolymer can be easily syntheized in the presence of a polymeric peroxide and can easily and permanently modify the surface of the polymer material.

One or more polymeric peroxides and vinyl type monomers containing vinyl type unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers are subjected to copolymerization, followed by neutralizing more than 50 mole percent of the carboxylic acid groups in the resultant product, thereby obtaining copolymers having peroxy bonds therein which are soluble in water or a mixed solution of water and anaqueous organic solvent (represented as solvent D in this disclosure). The said copolymers having peroxy bonds therein and vinyl type monomers are subjected to block-copolymerization, in the presence of solvent D, whereby the said copolymers having peroxy bonds in the molecule thereof are cleavaged at the peroxy bonds thereof, obtaining block copolymers with high efficiency. Combining order of the vinyl type monomers employed in the first copolymerization and the ones employed in the second copolymerization may be reversely employed. The neutralization of the carboxylic acid groups may be carried out after the second block copolymerization. The said block copolymer consists of polymer parts which are soluble in solvent D and other polymer parts which are insoluble in solvent D. When it is mixed with solvent D, the polymer parts which are soluble in solvent D are elongated and the other polymer parts which are insoluble in solvent D are coagulated to become particles in solvent D, with the result that the resultant mixture of the block copolymer and the solvent, becomes to be in the state of dispersion in the solvent.

Process for producing an aqueous liquid dispersion of polymers

An aqueous liquid dispersion of polymers can be obtained by two steps of reaction comprising the first step of copolymerizing polymeric peroxide with vinyl type monomers, whereby copolymers having peroxy bonds therein are obtained and the second step of subjecting said copolymers having peroxy bonds therein to block copolymerization with vinyl type monomers which are different in kind from the one employed in the first step of reaction, whereby said copolymers having peroxy bonds therein are cleaved at the peroxy bonds thereof, thereby obtaining block copolymers with high efficiency.
