An excessively large electric current is suppressed from flowing to an electrode. Provision is made for an electrode arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, a power supply connected to the electrode for applying a voltage thereto, an air fuel ratio detection device for detecting or estimating an air fuel ratio of an exhaust gas which flows through the exhaust passage, and a power upper limit setting device for setting an upper limit for electric power supplied to the electrode from the power supply in cases where the air fuel ratio detected or estimate.

Particulate matter processing apparatus

A concentration of HC in an exhaust gas is estimated with a high degree of accuracy by making use of a particulate matter processing apparatus (). In the particulate matter processing apparatus () in which a processing part () with an electrode () installed therein is arranged in an exhaust passage () of an internal combustion engine, wherein particulate matter is caused to aggregate by generating a potential difference between the electrode () and the processing part (), provision is made for a power supply () that is connected to the electrode () and applies a voltage thereto, an insulation part () that insulates electricity between the processing part () and the exhaust passage (), and a ground part () that grounds the processing part (), a detection device () that detects an electric current in the ground part (), and an estimation device () that estimates a concentration of HC in an exhaust gas based on the electric current detected by the detection device () at the time when the voltage is applied to the electrode () by means of the power supply ().

An amount of aggregation of particulate matter is estimated with a high degree of accuracy. A particulate matter processing apparatus in which a processing part with an electrode installed therein is arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, wherein particulate matter is caused to aggregate by generating a potential difference between the electrode and the processing part, is provided with a power supply that is connected to the electrode and applies a voltage thereto, a current detection device that detects an electric current which passes through the electrode, an estimation device that estimates an amount of aggregation of the particulate matter based on the electric current detected at the time when the voltage is applied to the electrode, an air fuel ratio detection device that detects or estimates an air fuel ratio of an exhaust gas which flows through the exhaust passage, and a prohibition device which prohibits an estimation by the estimation device in the case of a rich air fuel ratio.

Aggregation of particulate matter is facilitated. Provision is made for an electrode that is arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine with a voltage to be applied thereto being able to be changed, a detection device that detects an electric current passing through the electrode, a determination device that determines whether a pulse current has been generated in the electric current detected by the detection device, and a control device that reduces the voltage to be applied more than that at this time in cases where a determination has been made by the determination device that a pulse current has been generated.

A particulate matter control system includes: an electrode that is provided in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine; a power supply that is connected to the electrode and that applies voltage; a particle number detecting unit that detects the particle number of particulate matter on a downstream side of the electrode; a calculation unit that calculates a reduction rate of the particle number at the time when voltage is applied on the basis of the particle number detected by the particle number detecting unit at the time when voltage is applied and the particle number detected by the particle number detecting unit at the time when no voltage is applied; and a determination unit that determines that there is a failure when the reduction rate of the particle number, calculated by the calculation unit, is smaller than a threshold.

Particulate matter control system and its failure determination method

An engine provided with a fuel injector for directly injecting fuel into a cylinder, a spark plug positioning a spark gap in a flight path of fuel injected from the fuel injector, and a cavity formed in a piston top face, wherein at the time of stratified combustion, the fuel injector injects substantially all of the fuel in a direction merging with a tumble flow, swirling in a longitudinal direction along the cavity at the compression stroke, along the swirl direction of the tumble flow and uses the spark plug to ignite the fuel while the fuel at the end period of injection is passing through the spark gap.

Cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine

When a homogeneous combustion is to be executed at a lean air-fuel ratio, a tumbling flow that whirls in the cylinder descending in the cylinder bore on the exhaust valve side and ascending in the cylinder bore on the intake valve side, is intensified by the fuel that is injected from the fuel injection valve toward the exhaust valve side in the cylinder bore in the last stage of the intake stroke.

A direct-injection internal combustion engine includes a variable-exhaust-valve control device for controlling value timing of a variable exhaust valve through which the combustion chamber of an engine cylinder communicates with an exhaust path. The variable-exhaust-value control device retards the opening timing of the variable exhaust value to a retard side when the fuel is injected during a compression stroke or an expansion stroke while the direct-injection internal combustion engine is operating in a cold-start state.

Direct-injection internal combustion engine and method of controlling the direct-injection internal combustion engine

A fuel injection valve that directly injects a fuel into a combustion chamber from a rim of a cylinder toward a center line of the cylinder in a slanting direction toward a lower portion of the combustion chamber, an ignition plug that is arranged at substantially a center of the cylinder, and injection openings from which a spray that forms a shape that widens toward an end from a portion near a center of the combustion chamber toward a side wall of the combustion chamber on a cross-section perpendicular to a direction of injection is injected are included.

A control system controls a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. Fuel is injected from both the fuel injection valves in at least a part of an operating range. System and method for controlling spark-ignition internal combustion engine

A two-stroke engine comprising a spark plug arranged at the center of the inner wall of the cylinder head, and a fuel injector arranged on the periphery of the inner wall of the cylinder head. A depression extending from the point beneath the spark plug to the point beneath the tip portion of the fuel injector is formed on the top face of the piston. When the engine is operating under a light load, fuel is injected by the fuel injector only once toward the depression, and conversely, when the engine is operating under an intermediate load, fuel is injected twice. Namely, a first injection is carried out when the piston is at a lower position, and a second injection is carried out when the piston is at a higher position, to thus direct fuel toward the depression.

An exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine includes an engine capable of fuel combustion at lean air-fuel ratios, a catalyst constructed of zeolite carrying at least one kind of metal selected from transition metals and noble metals to reduce NOx under oxidizing conditions and in the presence of HC, engine operating condition detecting means for detecting the current engine operating condition, engine operating range determining means for determining whether or not the current engine operating condition is within an insufficient HC amount range, and an HC amount control means for controlling the amount of HC included in the exhaust gas when the engine operating range determining means determines that the engine operating condition is within the insufficient HC amount range. The HC amount control means degrades automization or evaporation of fuel injected from a fuel injection valve to thereby generate unburned fuel and to increase the HC amount in the exhaust gas, so that the NOx purification rate of the catalyst is improved.

Exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine

A two-stroke engine including a pair of intake valves. A masking wall is provided for each intake valve to mask the valve opening between the valve seat and the peripheral portion of the intake valve, which is located on the exhaust valve side, for the entire time for which the intake valve is open. The exhaust valves open earlier than the intake valves, and the exhaust valves and the intake valves are closed at substantially the same time.

An internal combustion engine comprising a spark plug arranged at the center of the inner wall of the cylinder head, and a fuel injector arranged on the periphery of the inner wall of the cylinder head. A depression extending from the position beneath the spark plug to the position beneath the tip portion of the fuel injector is formed on the top face of the piston, and fuel is injected toward the depression. When the engine is operating under a heavy load, the fuel moving along the axis of injection impinges upon the concaved inner wall of the depression at substantially a right angle. When the engine is operating under a light load, the injection time is retarded, and at this time, the fuel moving along the axis of injection impinges upon the concaved inner wall of the depression at an acute angle.
