The system and method of this invention provides an approach for automatically indicating what property a current set of documents possesses, and an approach for retrieving a set of similar documents by specifying a document rather than a keyword. First, in a set of keywords attached to the set of documents narrowed in response to user retrieval processing, a system according to the present invention counts the number of documents to which each of the keywords is attached to and displays the keywords in order of decreasing frequency. Next, a user specifies the document(s) of interest among the set of documents. In response to this, out of the keywords attached to the documents specified by the user, a keyword is able to retrieve any documents other than the one(s) specified. From the set of keywords attached to the current set of document narrowed, this is determined by omitting the keywords meeting the following conditions: (1) the keyword is not attached to any documents other than the specified one; and (2) the keyword is attached to all the documents in the current set of documents. An automatic retrieval with this keyword will enable narrowing by document rather by the keyword.

A technique for evaluating the topicality of keywords assigned to references retrieved from a database, so that interesting topics may be extracted. Since the number of references containing a specific keyword increases at a certain time and then gradually decreases with the passage of time, the topicality of a keyword can be evaluated by quantifying this phenomenon. Keywords are sorted based on the value of their topicality and displayed either as a list or as a graph in which the level of topicality is displayed along the time axis.

Information retrieval system and method

A system for resolving structural ambiguities in syntactic analysis of natural language, which ambiguities are caused by prepositional phrase attachment, relative clause attachment, and other modifier-modifiee relationships in sentences. The system uses instances of dependency (modification relationship) structures extracted from a terminology dictionary as a knowledge base. Structural ambiguity is represented by indicating that a word in a sentence has several words as candidate modifiees. The system resolves such ambiguity by 1) first searching the knowledge base, which contains dependency information in the form of tree structures, for dependencies between the word and each of its possible modifiees, 2) then assigning an order of preference to these dependencies by means of a path search in the tree structures, and 3) finally selecting the most preferable dependency as the modifiee. The sentences can be analyzed by a parser and transformed into dependency structures by the system. The knowledge base can be constructed automatically, since the source of knowledge exists in the form of texts, and knowledge bootstrapping can be realized by adding the outputs of the system to its knowledge base.

A method and apparatus for machine translation of language is disclosed. For each translation pattern, qualified words and corresponding translations are extracted. The invention generalizes words by converting them into concepts which are more general and can be applied to many inputs. A partial thesaurus is generated that describes hierarchies of words and concepts that are hypernyms of these words. Based on frequency information obtained for the words, an importance value is computed for each concept. Importances are used to determine the possibility of generalizing concepts in the translation.
