A dual type exhaust system is used in an automobile having an internal combustion engine with transversely mounted front and rear rows of cylinders. Two exhaust pipe assemblies extend from the front and rear rows of cylinders, respectively, toward the back of the car body. The two assemblies are arranged side by side in a space formed in a floor panel. The exhaust pipe assemblies are, respectively, provided with catalytic converters offset in a lengthwise direction of the car body with respect to the space relative to each other so as to be arranged in a straight line in the space.

A steering system for a vehicle has a tilt mechanism for adjusting the height of a steering wheel. The steering wheel can be tilted through a larger angular range while the vehicle is parking but is inhibited from being tilted out of a smaller angular range included in the larger angular range while the vehicle is running.

A steering system for use in an automotive vehicle includes a steering shaft inclined at a fixed angle with respect to a vehicle body, an air bag module securely mounted on one end of the steering shaft, and a steering wheel pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of the steering shaft. A power tiltable steering wheel has a steering column tube for supporting a steering wheel and a steering shaft. A power tiltable steering mechanism tilts the steering column tube. A control unit controls the power tiltable steering mechanism. When the driver gets out of the vehicle, the steering wheel is automatically tilted to a highest position. When the driver gets in the vehicle, the driver can adjust the position of the steering within a tiltable angle range that is lower than the noted highest position.

A gear shift device for a vehicle automatic transmission has a gear shift lever for placing an automatic transmission of an automotive vehicle in any desired gear range. The gear shift device further has an electrically controlled shift lock mechanism for locking the gear shift lever so that the transmission is fixed in a park gear range when a brake pedal is released, and for enabling the gear shift lever to operate when the transmission is in the park gear range, when an ignition key is set and the brake pedal is pressed. A mechanically operated interlock mechanism is provided for enabling the ignition key to be pulled out when shifting of the gear shift lever has placed the transmission in the park gear range.
