Logging while drilling (LWD) mechanical calipers are disclosed. An example apparatus to characterize a bore includes a drill collar, a sliding sleeve that moves longitudinally relative to the drill collar, and a sliding block operatively coupled to the sliding sleeve and movable relative to the drill collar. The example apparatus also includes a caliper arm operatively coupled to the sliding block, where the caliper arm is to displace radially outward towards an inner diameter of the bore based on movement of the sliding block, and a caliper sliding sensor to measure a movement of the sliding block.

Logging while drilling (LWD) mechanical calipers

Example ultrasonic transducers for measuring formation velocities are disclosed herein. An example apparatus includes a housing and an acoustic transducer having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The acoustic transducer is at least partially disposed in the housing. The example apparatus includes a window supported by the housing. At least a portion of the first surface of the acoustic transducer is in contact with the window. The housing and the window are to form a fluid seal for the acoustic transducer.

Ultrasonic transducers for measuring formation velocities

A downhole acoustic tool and method of use are provided. The acoustic tool includes an acoustic tool body. In addition, a transmitter section located along the acoustic tool body, including four or more transmitters to be driven so as to excite multi-mode waveforms. The acoustic tool further includes an array receiver section located along the acoustic tool body, containing a receiver sub-section comprising four or more receivers axially aligned with the four or more transmitters and spaced axially apart from the transmitter section. The acoustic tool also includes a processor configured to drive the transmitter section to excite multi-mode waveforms and to extract the multi-mode waveforms detected by the receiver section for interpretation of formation properties. A method for measuring a formation using the described acoustic tool is also provided.

Multi-mode acoustic tool and method

Methods and systems of measuring acoustic signals via a borehole wall are disclosed. One or more non-contact magneto-dynamic sensors are configured or designed for deployment at at least one depth in a borehole. The magneto-dynamic sensor comprises a coil excited by an electric current and a circuitry for outputting a signal corresponding to a time-varying impedance of the coil. A processor is configured to perform signal processing for deriving at least one of a magnitude or a frequency of vibration of the borehole wall based on the output signal from the circuitry.

Methods and systems for non-contact vibration measurements

A technique facilitates use of acoustic measurements to enable geo-steering during a well operation. A steerable well string is provided with acoustic systems used to collect data which is then processed to determine geo-steering inputs. In some applications, the well string may comprise a coiled tubing drilling tool. The coiled tubing drilling tool or other well string tool is combined with an azimuthally distributed pitch-catch micro-sonic sensor system and an azimuthally distributed ultrasonic pulse-echo transducer system. Data from these two systems is provided to a processing system which processes the data to determine, for example, real-time, geo-steering inputs. These inputs may then be used to more effectively steer the coiled tubing drilling tool or other well string tool.

System and methodology for acoustic measurement driven geo-steering

A method of model-based acoustic measurements for a wellbore comprises creating an interpretation chart of acoustic measurements by a downhole tool in a wellbore using a numerical modeling and performing an evaluation with respect to the wellbore based on the interpretation chart.

Method and system of model-based acoustic measurements for a perforated casing

A technique facilitates slowness estimation in accordance with dispersion information in a sonic logging tool. The technique may be used for processing dispersive waveforms in real-time. In this embodiment, the technique utilizes a sonic transmitter and a sonic receiver array in the logging tool. The technique also includes use of a memory and a processor mounted in the logging tool, for converting dispersive waveforms into slowness of the formation and/or fluid in accordance with dispersion information stored in the memory. Additionally, the technique may utilize a telemetry system for sending the formation slowness data and/or quality control indicators to the surface.

Method and apparatus for processing waveforms

A downhole tool for operation within a wellbore and including a transmitter array and first and second receiver arrays. The transmitter array includes a plurality of transmitters azimuthally distributed around a longitudinal axis of the downhole tool at a first axial location of the downhole tool. The first receiver array includes a plurality of first receivers azimuthally distributed around the longitudinal axis at a second axial location axially offset from the first axial location. The second receiver array includes a plurality of second receivers azimuthally distributed around the longitudinal axis at a third axial location axially offset from the first and second axial locations.

Downhole acoustic mapping

A technique facilitates monitoring of acoustic signals to measure a velocity vector of a borehole. Acoustic sensors are arranged in a desired acoustic sensor array and positioned along a body of a tool, e.g. a sonic logging tool. The acoustic sensor array is then positioned in fluid along a wall of a borehole formed in a subterranean formation. The acoustic sensors are used to collect acoustic signal data while the acoustic sensors are maintained in a non-contact position with respect to the wall of the borehole. The data may be processed to determine the desired velocity vector.

Apparatus for acoustic measurement in a downhole environment to enable high quality measurements to be obtained in difficult logging conditions are disclosed. An example apparatus includes a downhole tool having a body with a plurality of transmitters located on the body. A receiver is located on the body a distance from the transmitters and an attenuator section is integrally formed on the body between at least one transmitter and the receiver.

Apparatus for logging while drilling acoustic measurement

Provided is a fuel cell catalyst layer which has a catalytic performance equivalent to or higher than fuel cell catalyst layers containing platinum alone and which is inexpensive. The fuel cell catalyst layer of the present invention includes a metal oxycarbonitride-containing layer (I) and a platinum-containing layer (II). It is preferable that the mass ratio per unit area of the metal oxycarbonitride in the layer (I) to platinum in the layer (II) (metal oxycarbonitride/platinum) is 2 to 500. It is preferable that the mass per unit area of platinum in the layer (II) is 0.005 to 0.2 mg/cm.

Methods and related systems are described relating to a sealed acoustic transducer assembly for use in a wellbore is provided. A tool body is deployed in the wellbore, having a groove and a sealed acoustic transducer assembly removeably mounted therein. The transducer assembly includes an acoustic transducer element, and an elongated fluid filled sealed container housing the transducer element. The container includes flexible portions along the length of the container which allows for volume changes when exposed to changes in external pressure and/or temperature. Acoustic measurements downhole are made using the transducer element.

Transducer assembly for a downhole tools

Methods and related systems are described relating to a sealed acoustic transducer assembly for use in a wellbore is provided. One or more acoustic transducer elements, which can be receivers or transmitters, are housed in an elongated fluid filled sealed container. The sealed container is adapted to be removeably mounted to a portion of a drill collar. The container, which for example can be made of thin corrugated metal or rubber, includes flexible portions along the length of the container which allows for volume changes when exposed to changes in external pressure and/or temperature.

Transducer assemblies for downhole tools

A method for determining electrical condition of a wired drill pipe includes inducing an electromagnetic field in at least one joint of wired drill pipe. Voltages induced by electrical current flowing in at least one electrical conductor in the at least one wired drill pipe joint are detected. The electrical current is induced by the induced electromagnetic field. The electrical condition is determined from the detected voltages.

Method and apparatus for locating faults in wired drill pipe

A borehole tool positioning and measuring apparatus and its methods of use are provided. The apparatus and method can be used to centralize a logging tool in a wellbore, or position a logging tool at a desired relative alignment relative to the wellbore perimeter surface. The method and apparatuses can be used to determine useful information regarding borehole size and configuration. Various embodiments are useful for centralizing, eccentralizing, and otherwise positioning a borehole tool in a wellbore. Methods of determining borehole size and configuration measurements using a positioning apparatus are also provided.
