The calcium-aluminum system hydrogen absorbing alloy of the present invention is an alloy which is composed of a mixture P of Ca with Mg and an Al base alloy Q, has a molar ratio P:Q of 1:1.5 to 2.8 and shows a Laves phase with the C15-type structure as the fundamental structure thereof.

Disclosed are a hydrogen-occluding alloy electrode comprising an alloy powder wherein the alloy comprises a Ti-V solid solution mother phase and a secondary phase predominantly containing a Ti-Ni phase or an AB.sub.2 Laves phase in which the secondary phase forms a three-dimensional reticulate skeleton in the alloy; said hydrogen-occluding alloy powder surface-treated with hydrofluoric acid, to provide a titanium hydride surface and surface-coated with at least one metal of Ni, Cu and Co.

The calcium-aluminum system hydrogen absorbing alloy of the present invention is an alloy which is composed of a mixture P of Ca with (optional) Mg and an Al base alloy Q, has a molar ratio P:Q of 1:1.5 to 2.8 and shows a Laves phase with the C15-type structure as the fundamental structure thereof.

A hydrogen storage electrode for use as an anode of an alkaline battery and a process for producing such electrode are disclosed. According to the process, firstly particles of hydrogen storage alloy powder with maximum particle size of 50 .mu.m is prepared. The alloy powder particles are then made into microcapsules by electroless plating with copper amounting to 10%-20% by weight with respect to the sum of the alloy powder and the plating copper. With an electric current collector placed in contact with the copper-plated alloy powder set in a die cavity of a molding press, the molding dies are closed to press and the copper-plated powder and the current collector for bonding them together thereby to form the hydrogen storage electrode. Pressure exerted during the pressing is applied to such an extent that the porosity of the resulting compact of the pressed alloy powder falls in the range of 10% to 25%.

An alloy for occluding hydrogen is represented by the formula TiCr.sub.x Cu.sub.y (wherein x and y stand for numerical values satisfying the expressions, 0.01.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.4 and 1.3.ltoreq.x+y.ltoreq.2.0) and has an ability to occlude hydrogen at a lower temperature than the temperatures required by the conventional countertypes for occluding hydrogen.
