A power system comprises an engine configured to combust an air/fuel mixture and produce a flow of exhaust gas; an exhaust passageway fluidly connected to the engine to receive the flow of exhaust gas; an exhaust gas recirculation loop fluidly connecting the exhaust passageway to a fuel intake for the engine; a first conversion zone containing a fuel reforming catalyst located within the exhaust gas recirculation loop; and a second conversion zone located within the exhaust gas recirculation loop separate from and downstream of the first conversion zone stream, the second conversion zone containing a fuel cracking catalyst.

An internal combustion engine includes a first intake valve, a second intake valve, an accelerator open degree sensor that detects a load state, and an ECUthat controls the valve opening timing of the first and second intake valves and an amount of intake gas introduced to a combustion chamber from the first and second intake valves. When a load of a vehicle increases, the ECU reduces the ratio of the amount of intake gas from, among the two or more intake valves, the second intake valve having a later valve opening timing, whereas when the load decreases, the ECU increases the ratio.

Internal combustion engine

Catalyst compositions suitable for use in the exhaust gas recycle stream of an internal combustion engine are provided. Such catalyst compositions typically provide significant amounts of methane in addition to syngas. A reformer incorporating such a catalyst for use in an exhaust gas recycle portion of an internal combustion engine powertrain is described. A powertrain incorporating such a reformer, a method of increasing the octane rating of an exhaust gas recycle stream, and a method of operating an internal combustion engine using methane-assisted combustion are also described.

Vehicle powertrain with onboard catalytic reformer

The internal combustion engine has an ammonia feeder which feeds ammonia to a combustion chamber and an NOselective reduction catalyst which is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. The removal rate of the NOselective reduction catalyst depends on a ratio of concentration of ammonia to NOof the exhaust which flows into the NOselective reduction catalyst, that is, a ratio of concentration of inflow. A high removal rate range where the NOremoval rate in the NOselective reduction catalyst becomes substantially maximum and, furthermore, the ammonia removal rate becomes substantially maximum, is set in advance. The internal combustion engine is controlled so that the ratio of concentration of inflow becomes inside the high removal rate range.

Ammonia fueled internal combustion engine with exhaust purification

A hydrogen generator into which a mixed gas is run and out of which a reformed gas including hydrogen is discharged, which can reliably control the hydrogen concentration in the reformed gas to a desired concentration. The hydrogen generator is provided with an upstream side oxidation unit and a downstream side decomposition unit, burns part of the compound in the mixed gas in the oxidation unit using the oxygen in the mixed gas so as to generate heat of combustion, and uses the heat of combustion to break down another part of the compound in the mixed gas in the decomposition unit so as to generate hydrogen. The hydrogen generator is provided with a first temperature sensor controller.

Hydrogen generator

The internal combustion engine has an upstream side NOselective reduction catalyst and a downstream side NOselective reduction catalyst which are arranged in an engine exhaust passage. The upstream side NOselective reduction catalyst has a region where the NOremoval rate becomes substantially constant when the ratio of concentration of ammonia to NOof the inflowing exhaust rises. The internal combustion engine has an operating state in that region where the ratio of concentration of ammonia to NOis maintained. The downstream side NOselective reduction catalyst has an ammonia oxidation ability which is larger than the upstream side NOselective reduction catalyst.

A hydrogen generator provided with a cracker which cracks a compound containing hydrogen atoms and nitrogen atoms to generate hydrogen, a compound feeder which feeds the compound to the cracker, and an oxygen feeder which feeds oxygen to the cracker. The cracker includes catalyst particles which promote the cracking of the compound and catalyst particles which promote the oxidation of the compound. The cracker is fed with the compound and oxygen, causes the compound to oxidize to generate heat of oxidation, and uses the generated heat of oxidation to crack the compound.
