There is provided a controller for a vehicle that can execute, while the vehicle is stationary or moving, control of automatically stopping an engine upon determining that automatic stop conditions are met, and automatically restarting the engine upon determining that automatic restart conditions are met while automatic engine stop is in effect. At a time of first engine restart in one trip, the controller diagnoses whether a system that automatically restarts the engine is normal or abnormal. The automatic stop conditions for in-motion automatic engine stop include automatic stop execution conditions that are set based on a state of the vehicle, and automatic stop permit conditions that are set based on a travel environment. The controller sets the automatic stop permit conditions such that determination criteria are more stringent as a cumulative number of times of in-motion automatic engine stop in one trip is smaller.

An electronic control device automatically stops an engine operation when a remaining electric power amount index value is equal to or larger than an engine stop permission threshold. The device automatically restarts the engine operation when the remaining electric power amount index value is smaller than an engine restart threshold after the engine operation is automatically stopped. The device changes the engine stop permission threshold from a first threshold, which has been set until a start of an activation of an electric actuator, to a second threshold, which is larger than the first threshold, when the automatic engine stop is not carried out and the activation of the actuator is detected.

An idling stop control device of the invention acquires an index (SOCx) indicating a magnitude of a remaining charged electric power amount of a battery (), restarts an operation of an engine () by operating a starter () when the index becomes smaller than a predetermined restart threshold (SOCstart) while an automatic stop of the operation of the engine has been carried out, and changes the threshold from a first threshold (SOC) to a second threshold (SOC) when an operation of an electric actuator () is started while the automatic stop has been carried out.
