The present invention is directed to an apparatus for and a method of automatically creating a supplemental segment in two-dimensional drawings. Two-dimensional drawing data concerning at least three views depicted based on orthogonal projection is previously stored in a drawing data storage device. Disclosed is a system for automatic adjustment of character spacing suited to characters in innumerable combinations, such as in the case with Chinese characters and hiragana and katakana characters in the Japanese language. In character dot data of a plurality of characters which construct a character string developed in memory, character density data representing the broadness of the character face of a character, character face overlap area data representing degree of overlap between this character and a character adjacent thereto in a state in which the character and adjoining character are closest to each other, and blank-space area data representing the broadness of blank space produced between the two characters are generated for each and every character. The appropriate character spacing is inferred for each character through fuzzy reasoning by applying the character density data, character face overlap area data and blank-space area data to already given knowledge relating to character spacing adjustment.

Apparatus and method for adjusting character spacing

The present invention is carried out by modifying input data by the degree grade with respect to membership functions. The degree of fit measure is then used to obtain the information amount of each phenomena. A relational coefficient, which indicates the relatedness of a number of phenomena (for example, phenomena linked by an AND), is obtained. The degree of fit, information amount and relational coefficient are then used to determine the possibility of a conclusion. This scheme allows the user to enhance the accuracy of the information amount at the time the data are input. It also enables the user to attain an inference result with high discriminability based upon the relatedness of a number of phenomena with respect to a single conclusion. In another embodiment, the knowledge of expert users expressing the relationships between phenomena and conclusions is stored prior to use of the device. An inference device calculates the possibility of various conclusions and then calculates the clearnesses of the possibilities it has produced. As a result, the device exploits the user's knowledge that a single phenomenon for which a single conclusion is to be drawn may have two or more distinct definitions; and these may be conjoined in an OR relationship or conjoined in an AND relationship. The accuracy of inferences is thus improved and the area in which inferences are applied is broadened.

When a relationship between a factor and a conclusion has occurred, data indicative of this relationship is stored in a case-history file. For example, in an apparatus which uses approximate reasoning to perform fault diagnosis, the type of a fault and its symptoms are recorded (in a repair report, maintenance report or the like) when the fault occurs. A knowledge base is revised or created by such case-history file data. The possibility of a conclusion, static information quantities, clarity of a conclusion, etc., are computed based upon such a knowledge base.
