Coated synthetic resin lenses having a primer layer of a copolymer of an acrylic and/or methacrylic monomer and an aromatic vinyl compound between the base material and a cured abrasion resistant layer of colloidal silica and an inorganic anti-reflection coating are provided. The cured coat of colloidal silica has a particle diameter between about 1 and 100 millimicrons and is dispersed in a hydrolyzed silane compound. The organic primer coating improves adhesion properties between the base material and the cured abrasion-resistant layer resulting in coated lenses of improved impact resistance.

A contact lens article comprises a resin obtained by copolymerizing starting monomer components containing a silicon-containing compound (A) represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 each represent a methyl group or ##STR2## l represents 0 or 1, m represents an integer of 1 to 3 and n and p each represent an integer of 0 to 3; a fluorine-containing compound (B) represented by the formula (II) of: ##STR3## wherein at least one of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represents a straight chain or branched chain fluoroalkyl group represented by --C.sub.h H.sub.k F.sub.2h+l-k in which h represents an integer of 2 to 18, k represents an integer of 1 to 2 multiplied by h and when one of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is --C.sub.h H.sub.k F.sub.2h+l-k, the other of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 2 to 12 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms; and a radical polymerizable vinyl monomer.

Contact lens article made of silicon- and fluorine-containing resin

An improved synthetic resin opthalmic lens and a method for treating the surface of the lens are provided. The lens is formed by polymerizing at least one bis(allyloxycarbonyloxy-alkoxy) dihalide-phenyl alkane and one bifunctional allyl compound, optionally with a bis(allylcarbonate) compound. The lens is chemically treated with an aqueous solution of polyethyleneglycol and an alkali metal hydroxide and a surface hard coat is formed on the treated surface.

Synthetic resin ophthalmic lens having a surface hard coat

Photochromic coating compositions for synthetic resin ophthalmic lenses to impart photochromic properties to the lenses are provided. The photochromic coating composition includes an organic silicon compound to impart a surface hard coating and a photochromic material dispersed in the hard coat to impart photochromic properties. The photochromic materials may include compounds including the molybdic acid amine group, dithizone-mercury polymers, halogenated silver or copper, and a benzopyrylospiran compound. The coating composition is prepared by dispersing the photochromic material in a silicon hard coating composition. The coating composition may be coated on the surface of a synthetic resin lens by dipping, spraying, spin coating, flow coating and the like and then dry-heated to be cured. The coating composition is applied in thicknesses from about 1 to 30 microns. The synthetic resin lenses which may be coated are transparent resins, such as polycarbonate resins, acryl resin, CR-39 resins, polystyrene and the like.
