An irradiation target is formed into a sphere. The spherical irradiation target can be iridium metal containing natural or enriched iridium. The radiation source can be manufactured by manufacturing a spherical irradiation target, accommodating the spherical irradiation target in a rotating capsule, and rotating an axial flow impeller by a downward flow of a reactor primary coolant, whereby the rotating capsule is rotated. This radiation source provides an improved nondestructive inspection image having a high geometric resolution, and has no radiation source anisotropy and also has high target recyclability.

A plasma display panel includes a first substrate, and a second substrate facing the first substrate. An optical head used for recording/reproducing information signals for an optical disc having a light transmitting layer on a recording layer includes an actuator for the collimator lens. A collimator lens arranged between a light source and an objective lens is moved by the actuator for the collimator lens in a direction of cancelling the spherical aberration ascribable to thickness errors in the light transmitting layer. By this structure, the amount of generation of spherical aberration is reduced even if the numerical aperture NA of the objective lens loaded on the optical head is increased to render it possible to increase the recording capacity of the optical disc.

An optical pickup device has a first optical system including a double lens type lens unit having a forward lens arranged facing an optical disc and a backward lens having an optical axis coincident with the forward lens. The optical pickup device also has a second optical system including an objective lens and first and second gap detection photodetectors for detecting the separation between the signal readout surface of the optical disc and the forward lens of the double lens type lens unit. The optical pickup device also includes a bobbin provided with the double lens type lens unit of the first optical system and with the objective lens of the second optical system and an electromagnetic driving unit for driving the bobbin in a first direction parallel to the optical axis of the objective lens and that of the forward lens of the double lens type lens unit and in a second direction normal to the optical axes. With the optical pickup device, the objective lens unit can be improved in operational reliability and the device in its entirety can be reduced in size.

A recording/reproducing apparatus for recording and/or reproducing the information on or from an optical recording medium by illuminating laser light on it using a double-lens type objective lens unit made up of at least a first lens and a second lens. The apparatus includes a light source for radiating laser light, a first lens for converging the laser light radiated from the light source, a second lens arranged between the first lens and the optical recording medium, a detection unit for detecting the sort of the recording medium and a piezoelectric element for causing relative movement between the first and second lenses for varying the distance between the two lenses in the direction along the optical axis. Specifically, the second lens is moved by a movement unit responsive to the results of detection by the detection unit to vary the separation between the first and second lenses. This increases the numerical aperture NA and reduces the effect of aberration to enable high-density recording and/or reproduction of information signals.

The automatic tracking/image sensing device includes a lens barrel for supporting an image sensing lens, a support mechanism for supporting the lens barrel in such a way that the lens barrel can be moved, driver for driving the lens barrel, an image sensor installed at a location in close proximity to an image created by the image sensing lens, a video signal processor for generating a video signal based on a signal output by the image sensor, an object position detector for computing a positional deviation from the current position of the object to the center of the screen in accordance with the video signal generated by the video signal processor, a deflection detecting sensor for detecting the deflection of the lens barrel and a lens barrel posture controller for adjusting the angle of the lens barrel by using a driver in accordance with the positional deviation and the deflection. There can thus be provided an automatic tracking image sensing device with a simple configuration for automatic tracking by deflection correction.
