A pair of guide holes for guide pin insertion and one or a plurality of optical fiber positioning holes extending inwardly from the front end surface are formed in a connector ferrule of an optical connector. A chamfer is formed on the opening edge portion of the guide hole of the connector ferrule on the front end surface side thereof. The opening diameter R of the guide hole at the front end surface is preferably 1.0 to 1.5 mm when the front end surface is slant polished at an angle of 8 degrees. Furthermore, the chamfering angle &#x3b8; of the chamfer is preferably 90 to 150 degrees. Moreover, the average particle size of the filler contained in the connector ferrule is no more than 20 &#x3bc;m. As a result, the surface of the chamfer is comparatively smooth.

Optical connector ferrule, optical connector and making method for them

An optical connector according to the present invention has a ferrule body provided with a fiber positioning hole, a pair of guide holes into which guide pins are inserted, and a connecting end face in which ends of the fiber positioning hole and guide holes open. A chamfer portion equivalent to a part of a surface of a body of revolution is formed at each guide hole on the connecting end face side. Further, the connecting end face is formed at an angle relative to a plane normal to the center axes of the pair of guide holes. In this structure, the slope of the connecting end face can suppress degradation of connection loss, and the provision of the chamfer portions can facilitate insertion of the guide pins, prevent damage of the connecting end face due to the guide pins, and also suppress degradation of connection loss due to the damage.

An optical connector ferrule A is mounted on the distal end of a fiber optic ribbon cable to form an optical connector Ca. A mating surface of the optical connector Ca opposes an optical connector Cb to be mated. Fiber accommodating holes are formed in the mating surface so as to accommodate optical fibers, and a pair of guide projections are formed on the mating surface so as to be positioned with the optical connector Cb. The ferrule A is integrally molded with a resin. This provides an optical connector ferrule allowing the easy manufacturing of an optical connector with good transmission performance.

A ferrule for optical connector according to the present invention is provided with a fiber positioning hole, a pair of guide holes into which guide pins are inserted, and a connecting end face in which ends of the fiber positioning hole and guide holes open. A chamfer portion equivalent to a part of a surface of a body of revolution is formed at each guide hole on the connecting end face side. Further, the connecting end face is formed at an angle relative to a plane normal to the center axes of the pair of guide holes. The optical fiber positioning member in accordance with the present invention comprises a resin composition containing a PPS resin mainly composed of a linear type PPS resin at a content in the range of 24% to 30% by weight, silica particles at a content in the range of 61% to 67% by weight, and tetrapod-shaped whiskers at a content in the range of 6% to 12% by weight.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber positioning member, such as a ferrule, used for optically coupling optical fibers to each other. The object of the present invention is to provide an optical fiber positioning member having practically sufficient mechanical strength and long-term durability, while maintaining high dimensional precision and dimensional stability. The optical fiber positioning member of the present invention comprises a resin composition containing a polyphenylene sulfide resin at a ratio in the range of 15% to 35% by weight, silica particles at a ratio in the range of 45% to 65% by weight, and silicate whiskers at a ratio in the range of 26% to 35% by weight, the resin composition containing the silica particles and the silicate whiskers at a ratio in the range of 65% to 85% by weight.

In an optical connector for positioning and fixing the distal end of a fiber optic ribbon cable with a connector ferrule, a guide-pin hole is formed in a mating end connected with another optical connector. A pair of positioning guide pins are inserted into the respective guide-pin holes. The guide-pin hole has an enlarged region whose diameter gradually increases toward the opening end portion of the mating end.

An end-face-side core 5 from which an optical fiber hole forming pin 1 is projected is fastened by a mold to a fiber-side core 10 from which an optical fiber hole forming pin 6 and a cavity forming member (for example, a tape fiber hole forming rectangular body 8) are projected, while the end-face-side core and the fiber-side core are opposed to each other, the cavity forming member being behind the optical fiber hole forming pin 6 and larger than the optical fiber hole forming pin. A resin is injected into a cavity formed in the mold. The mold is opened, the end-face-side core 5 and the fiber-side core 10 are slid in directions in which the end-face-side core and the fiber-side core are separated from each other, and a resin molded product is then taken out.

Method of molding an optical connector ferrule

An optical connector in which an optical fiber is fixed within a ferrule such that a tip of the optical fiber is disposed at a front end face position of the ferrule. An optical-fiber-positioning hole formed so as to directly extend into the ferrule from an optical connecting orifice formed in the front end face of the ferrule has a diameter greater than a diameter of the optical fiber positioned within the optical-fiber-positioning hole, the optical-fiber-positioning hole having therein a compressible unfixing area for allowing the optical fiber to compress along the optical-fiber-positioning hole, and a fixing area, disposed behind the compressible unfixing area, for fixing the optical fiber to the ferrule.

Optical connector and method of making the same

An optical connector according to the present invention is comprised of a ferrule having at least one optical fiber and a plurality of guide holes, and a plurality of guide pins each being inserted in each of the holes. The guide pin is capable of being attached into and detached from the hole. At least one of an inner diameter of the guide hole and an outer diameter of the guide pin change the longitudinal direction thereof, and at least a part of the guide pin is in contact with the guide hole.

Optical connector

The present invention relates to an adhesive for connecting and fixing an optical fiber to an optical connector and to an optical connector which uses that adhesive. The adhesive prevents deformation of the optical connector ferrule and stressing of the optical fiber due to hardening shrinkage during the hardening of the adhesive and/or a shrinkage during cooling of the adhesive. In accordance with the invention, (1) the value of (the coefficient of linear expansion (.degree.C..sup.-1) of the adhesive).times.(the difference between a hardening temperature of the adhesive and room temperature (.degree.C.)).times.(Young's Modulus (kg/mm.sup.2) of the adhesive) is equal to or less than about 2.5, (2) the value of (the rate of hardening shrinkage (%) of the adhesive).times.(Young's Modulus (kg/mm.sup.2) of the adhesive) is equal to or less than about 1000 and/or (3) the adhesive hardens at room temperature.

An optical connector in which the deformation of the connector caused by the shrinkage of an adhesive at the time of adhering and fixing an optical fiber and a ferrule is small, and the increment of loss in connection is suppressed. The optical connector in which different adhesives are used in an optical fiber insertion hole portion and an adhesive injection opening portion respectively.
