A totally solid polymer electrolyte composition with high ionic conductivity and enhanced mechanical properties is provided. This electrolyte composition is produced by polymerizing a monomer composition comprising a molten quaternary ammonium salt having a polymerizable functional group introduced therein and a charge transfer ion source in the presence of a polymeric reinforcing material. The polymeric reinforcing material can be formed into a composite of polymer blend morphology by dissolving the monomer composition and the reinforcing material in an appropriate organic solvent and polymerizing the solution. Alternatively, the composite can be obtained by impregnating a porous sheet or film as the reinforcing material with the monomer composition and effecting polymerization. An electrolyte for lithium ion battery can be obtained by selecting a lithium salt as the charge transfer ion source; an electrolyte for fuel cell by selecting a proton donor; and an electrolyte for dye sensitized solar cell by selecting a redox ion pair. A polymer electrolyte composition not containing the charge transfer ion source is also useful as an electrolyte for electrolytic capacitor.

This invention provides a battery precursor for producing a battery through a cutting process, in which a large number of battery elements comprising positive active material layers, separators having electrolytes and negative active material layers are installed in parallel between a plate-like positive current collector plate and a negative current collector plate facing each other, and the respective battery elements are partitioned each other and sealed by insulators. According to this battery precursor, a battery having a voluntary shape can be obtained easily by cutting only.

A sodium-sulfur storage battery comprises a battery housing which functions as a positive current terminal collector, a solid electrolyte tube which is permeable to sodium ion and is disposed in the battery housing, and a positive electroconductive material, into which positive reactant is impregnated, disposed in a positive chamber between the solid electrolyte tube and the battery housing. The positive electroconductive material has a rugged part consisting of longitudinally extending concave and convex portions, which are formed by compression molding, at the inner surface thereof.

The sodium sulfur storage battery comprises a solid electrolyte tube; metallic fiber filled in said solid electrolyte tube; powder, grain or mixture of them of substance resistant to attack by molten sodium which has porosity smaller than that of the metallic fiber and is filled in a first space above the metallic fiber; a battery housing; a positive electroconductive material disposed in a space between the battery housing and the solid electrolyte tube; a ring disposed on the upper surface of the positive electroconductive material; powder, grain or mixture of them of substance resistant to attack by molten sulfur which is filled in a second space above said ring and is prevented from dropping by said ring; and a solder glass layer arranged on a portion of the outer peripheral surface of the solid electrolyte tube in said second space.

A manufacturing method of a sodium-sulfur storage battery wherein a negative cover is thermocompressively jointed to an upper surface of an alpha alumina ring which are jointed with solder glass to a solid electrolyte tube, and a positive cover is thermocompressively jointed to a lower surface of said alpha alumina ring, is characterized in that diffusion layers of chrome are provided on the surfaces of the negative and positive covers, coating layers of aluminum are provided at least on the surfaces, which are thermocompressively jointed, of the negative and positive covers, and thermocompressively jointing surfaces are thermocompressively jointed in the air with aluminum rings thereon, respectively. Said negative and positive covers may be made from stainless steel, iron or alloy of iron and nickel. Said chrome diffusion layers may be about 20.mu.-120.mu. in thickness, respectively, and said aluminum layers may be about 5.mu.-90.mu. in thickness, respectively.

Sodium-sulfur storage battery and a manufacturing method of the same

The present disclosure describes a sodium-sulfur storage battery comprising a sodium-ion conductive solid electrolyte tube; a positive electroconductive material consisting of graphite felt or carbon felt, and a metal sulfide layer disposed between the solid electrolyte tube and the positive electro-conductive material. Said metal sulfide layer may be sulfurated metal such as aluminum, nickel, copper, iron, tin, zinc, lead, magnesium and chrome. A metal member may be disposed between the solid electrolyte tube and the positive electroconductive material to form said metal sulfide layer by a sulfurated part formed at least at the surface of said metal member.

The present invention discloses a manufacturing method of a sodium-sulfur storage battery comprising battery components of metallic members jointed by means of a thermocompression method to an .alpha.-alumina ring which is jointed to a sodium ion conductive solid electrolytic tube using solder glass. According to the invention, thicknesses of the metallic members thermocompressively jointed to upper and lower surfaces of said .alpha.-alumina ring is in a range from about 0.2 mm to about 0.6 mm. Plate-shaped aluminum rings are disposed between said .alpha.-alumina ring and said metallic members respectively and are thermocompressively jointed in air under condition of a temperature in a range from about 600.degree. to about 625.degree. C. and a pressure in a range from about 1200 to about 1600 kg/cm.sup.2.

Manufacture method of a sodium-sulfur storage battery

The present invention discloses a sodium-sulfur storage battery utilizing an inside of a sodium-ion conductive solid electrolyte tube as a negative chamber, comprising an .alpha.-alumina ring jointed with solder glass to an open end of said electrolyte tube, a flanged aluminum housing having a fine hole at its bottom incorporated in said solid electrolyte tube, a negative auxiliary cover thermo-compressively jointed through a flange of said aluminum housing to an upper surface of said .alpha.-alumina ring, and a negative cover provided with a negative current collector terminal welded to said negative auxiliary cover.
