A hybrid drive system comprising: a torque amplify mechanism coupled to an output member of an internal combustion engine and an output member of an electric motor, as energized by an electric power to output a torque, for amplifying and outputting the torque, as outputted from the internal combustion engine, by controlling the torque of the electric motor; and a continuously variable transmission arranged between torque amplify mechanism and the output shaft for increasing/decreasing and outputting the torque inputted from the torque amplify mechanism. Further comprised is a forward/backward switching mechanism between the torque amplify mechanism and the output shaft for setting a forward state, in which the inputted motive power is unreversed and outputted, and a backward state in which the inputted motive power is reversed and outputted. As a result, the reverse run can be made only with the motive power outputted from the internal combustion engine.

Disclosed are a pigment, a production process therefor, a production process therefor and for improving its weather resistance, and a metallic paint made therefrom. The pigment includes a transparent or semi-transparent scaly substrate, a TiO.sub.2 layer coated on an entire surface of the substrate, light absorbing portions formed on a surface of the TiO.sub.2 layer in a scattering manner and including low order oxides of titanium, and glossy portions formed on a surface of the TiO.sub.2 layer in a scattering manner and having a metallic glossy effect. The pigment produces a metallic glossy effect resulting from the glossy portions, strong interference colors resulting from the TiO.sub.2 layer and substance colors resulting from the light absorbing portions, and it exhibits a great covering power. Such an excellent pigment can be obtained by the production process in which sputtering is carried out onto a conventional pearl mica pigment, and its weather resistance can be improved by the production process in which chromium (III) hydroxide is repeatedly coated on a conventional pearl mica pigment before and after the sputtering. When the metallic paint is made from the pigment, it naturally has the metallic glossy effect, the strong interference colors, the substance colors and the great covering power all of which result from the pigment and is suitable for an automobile top coat paint.

An apparatus for controlling a hydraulic clutch, including a two-position clutch control valve, a two-position rapid clutch release valve, and a first fluid passage system for releasing the clutch, a second fluid passage system for engaging the clutch, and a third fluid passage system for releasing the clutch. These three passage systems for feeding and discharging a fluid into and from the clutch are selected by respective three combinations of the operating positions of the two valves. Normally, a predetermined one of the first and third passage systems is selected for releasing the clutch, and the other of these two systems is selected in the event of a trouble with the valves.

An apparatus for controlling a vehicle continuously variable transmission, including a directional control valve having a first spool movable between a shift-down and a shift-up position, a flow control valve including a second spool movable between a flow-restricting and a non-restricting position, and a first and a second solenoid-operated valve for applying an actuating pressure to the first and second spools. The directional and flow control valves and the solenoid-operated valves are adapted such that the first and second spools are moved toward the shift-up and flow restricting positions, respectively, when the actuating pressure is not applied to the spools, or when solenoid coils of the two solenoid-operated valves are both off. The directional control valve may have a shift-down chamber for receiving a pilot pressure to move the first spool to the shift-down position when a failure of one of the solenoid coils exists while the vehicle speed is lower than a predetermined limit.

A hydraulic control apparatus for a power transmitting system for an automotive vehicle having a continuously variable transmission which has a first and a second shaft, a pair of variable-diameter pulleys provided on the first and second shafts, a belt connecting the pulleys, and a pair of hydraulic actuators for changing diameters of the pulleys, wherein a tension of the belt is controlled by regulating an actuating pressure in a driven side actuator of the hydraulic actuators which is provided on a driven one of the two shafts. A hydraulic control apparatus for a vehicle power transmitting system having a fluid coupling equipped with a lock-up clutch, and a transmission to which power is transmitted from an engine of the vehicle through the fluid coupling. The fluid coupling has an engaging chamber and a releasing chamber for engaging and releasing the lock-up clutch. The apparatus includes a discharge passage communicating with the engaging chamber, for normally draining the engaging chamber to a drain, to thereby normally release the lock-up clutch, and a rapid release valve connected to the discharge passage. The rapid release valve operates to by-pass the discharge passage to the drain therethrough, for thereby rapidly draining the engaging chamber to rapidly release the lock-up clutch. A lock-up pressure regulating valve is provided for regulating a lock-up clutch pressure applied to the fluid coupling, normally to a first value, and upon operation of the rapid release valve, to a second value higher than the first value.

For an automatic transmission for a vehicle including a speed stage shifting device such as shown in FIG. 1 in which the clutch C.sub.1 is adapted to be engaged when the 2nd speed stage and the 3rd speed stage are set up and disengaged when the 4th speed stage is set up, the engagement of the clutch C.sub.1 being essential for setting up the 2nd speed stage while the engagement of the clutch C.sub.1 is not essential for setting up the 3rd speed stage unless engine brake availability is required, a hydraulic control device includes a first passage 235 and a second passage 329 for supplying a hydraulic pressure to the clutch C.sub.1 in parallel with one another, the first passage having a substantially less fluid flow resistance than the second passage, and a fluid flow switching over mechanism including a 1-2 shift valve 210 and a C.sub.1 control valve 300 for alternatively communicating the first or the second passage while interrupting the second or the first passage according to whether the 2nd speed stage or the 3rd speed stage is set up. An accumulator 450 may be provided in the second passage 329. Further, a one way val e 469, or more desirably a parallel connection of the one way valve 469 and an orifice 467 may be provided between the accumulator and the clutch C.sub.1.

A hydraulic control device for generating a hydraulic pressure for a back pressure chamber of an accumulator in a speed stage shifting device of an automatic transmission for a vehicle such as an automobile is adapted to generate a hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the back pressure chamber of the accumulator by modulating the so-called line hydraulic pressure according to a balance between the modulated pressure itself and the line hydraulic pressure or more desirably an engine power simulation pressure modulated from the line hydraulic pressure to be lower than the line hydraulic pressure in low engine output operation under an influence of a signal hydraulic pressure controlled by an electromagnetic valve, wherein the signal hydraulic pressure decreases to substantially zero when the electromagnetic valve fails, and the accumulator control valve has a spool element having a first pressure receiving area exposed to the modulated hydraulic pressure to generate a positive feedback effect of decreasing the modulated hydraulic pressure along with increase thereof and a second pressure receiving area so that the accumulator control valve variably operates even when the signal pressure has decreased to zero exposed to the line hydraulic pressure or the engine power simulation pressure to generate an effect of increasing the modulated pressure, the first pressure receiving area having an effective pressure responsive sectional area substantially equal in the magnitude and opposite in the orientation to that of the second pressure receiving area.
