Minute diamond powder, method for collecting the same and slurry comprisng the same in suspension

An object of this invention is to provide a fine powder of diamond particles of less than 50 nm with a narrow particle size range. The diamond is single crystalline and characterized with a lot of sharp edges and sharp points. Another object is to provide a method for efficiently producing such fine powder. The method comprises mechanically crushing a raw material of single crystalline diamond particles to prepare starting minute particles of diamond, then imparting hydrophilic quality to the surface of diamond particles. As hydrophilic the diamond particles are dispersed in water to form a slurry, which is set and kept weakly alkaline. The slurry is then subjected to a preliminary grading step, whereby the slurry is removed of a top particle size fraction of the diamond particles that has a Dsize of 60 nm or more. Eliminated of said top particle size fraction, the slurry is then diluted with water to regulate the diamond concentration to 0.1% (by weight) or less. The slurry so conditioned is subjected to a centrifugal force, whereby a coarser particle size fraction of the diamond particles is condensed to a solid cake and removed from the slurry. Effluent slurry is taken out from the centrifugal grading that contains a fraction of the diamond particles having decreased particle sizes.

Fine powder of single crystalline diamond particles and a method for the production thereof

Diamond particles are provided having a nominal size of 5 &mgr;m or less by D50 measurement and which comprise an explicit thermal effect such as a minute crack in the crystal structure due to a heat treatment at a temperature at least of 1000&deg; C. The diamond particles include diamond converted non-diamond carbon in an amount of at least 0.5% by weight relative to the whole diamond particle. A method for synthesizing the diamond particles includes providing diamond particles having a primary particle D50 average size of 50 nm or greater, subjecting the diamond particles to a heat treatment at a temperature of at least 1000&deg; C. in either a non-oxidizing atmosphere or in a vacuum, and converting the diamond partly to non-diamond carbon.

Diamond abrasive particles and method for preparing the same

The principal objects of the invention is to provide diamond fine particles with a surface nature so improved as to form a stable, uniform suspension or dispersion in a common medium such as water and alcohol. Another object is to provide an effective technique for producing hydrophilic diamond fine particles by chemically modifying the particle surface nature, while removing at the same time contaminants and foreign materials which coexist with the diamond. In the invention, diamond particles are treated by boiling in the treatment fluid of sulfuric acid solution, which is in particular of concentrated or fuming nature, at a temperature more than 200&deg; C., which is preferably 250&deg; C. or more.

A method is provided for efficiently producing an entirely quality-controlled CVD diamond. A CVD process is interrupted at an early stage and the deposit is taken out of the reaction chamber, before a significant mass is accumulated, and is inspected by means of cathodoluminescence. The spectrum are compared with a given reference in terms of peak position, half width and 20%-value width in coordination. The observed deviation allows to determine whether to maintain or alter the settings. A diamond substance of acceptable quality which is properly specified in terms of the CL parameters is also provided.

Making a diamond substance exhibiting a cathodoluminescence spectrum with the peak at a photon energy greater than 2.8 eV (electron volt), the half-value and 20%-value width not exceeding 0.5 eV and 0.8 eV, respectively, comprising: providing a substrate in a closed chamber, introducing a matrix gas comprising H.sub.2 and one selected from hydrocarbon and CO to said chamber, exciting the gas to create a plasma while heating said substrate to a temperature of at least 700.degree. C. and, thus, causing deposition and growth of diamond substance which is crystallographically diamond, controlling parameters of the deposition by means of the cathodoluminescence record and recovering the diamond substance from the chamber.
