A method of controlling an energy saving mode in an image forming apparatus having hardware resources used in an image forming process and programs for performing the image forming process includes a step of letting the image forming apparatus enter into an energy saving mode in a standby state in which the image forming apparatus is not used, and a step of recovering at least part of functions of the image forming apparatus in response to setting of a data carrier in the image forming apparatus, said data carrier being in a possession of an operator.

A matrix relay is formed with a plurality of latching relays arranged in a matrix and mounted on a base of an electrically insulative material. Each of the latching relays comprises an excitation coil, permanent magnet, a pair of first and second fixed contacts, and an armature carrying a pair of first and second movable springs each providing movable contacts. The armature is magnetically coupled to the excitation coil so as to be movable in response to energization of the coil by current of selective polarity between close and open positions of the fixed and movable contacts. A plurality of the armatures of the latching relays arranged in a row of the matrix are assembled into a single armature block to be mounted on the base as a single unit. The armature block comprises a single pair of first and second supporting members made of an electrically conductive material. The coefficients are stored in a memory and derived in accordance with engine operating conditions. The estimated quantity of induced air is corrected so as to approximate quantity of air actually induced in the cylinder. A basic injection pulse width is calculated based on the corrected air quantity. The basic injection pulse width is corrected by a feedback coefficient, thereby producing a fuel injection pulse width signal for operating a fuel injector of the engine.

The quantity of air inducted in a cylinder of an engine is estimated by using equations based on various coefficients. The coefficients are stored in a memory and derived in accordance with engine operating conditions. A basic injection pulse width is calculated by the estimated inducted air quantity and speed of the engine. The basic injection pulse width is corrected by a feedback coefficient, thereby producing a fuel injection pulse width signal for operating a fuel injector of the engine.

An image forming apparatus of the type producing a single composite color image on a paper which is transported by a belt by transferring image components of different colors to the paper in register with each other. The apparatus reduces with a simple construction the positional deviation of the image components which occurs in an intended direction of paper transport. Recording devices individually adapted for black, cyan, magenta and yellow are arranged side by side. Pattern images for measurement each being associated with a respective one of those colors are formed on the belt. A timing at which each of the pattern images arrives is sensed and counted. The count is compared with a reference value to calculate an amount of deviation. Write start timing signals each being associated with a particular color are generated which are individually variable on the basis of the deviation calculated. The pattern images of the respective colors are each generated by using a write start timing associated with the color as a reference, and the pattern to be provided by any of the recording devices is outputted on a downstream side of the belt relative to the pattern to be provided by another recording device which is located downstream of the first-mentioned recording device.
