A power transmission system has an AC power source and a high-frequency power driver that make up a high-frequency power source, and a primary self-resonant coil and a secondary self-resonant coil. The secondary self-resonant coil is magnetically coupled, by magnetic field resonance, to the primary self-resonant coil, and receives as a result high-frequency power from the primary self-resonant coil. The coils of the primary self-resonant coil and the secondary self-resonant coil resonate in an even mode when high-frequency power is transmitted from the primary self-resonant coil to the secondary self-resonant coil. Specifically, the primary self-resonant coil and the secondary self-resonant coil resonate in a state where currents in mutually opposite directions flow in the two coils.

An HC-adsorbent capable of adsorbing various kinds of hydrocarbon including lower and higher hydrocarbon, of which the adsorbable amount per unit volume is large, and which exhibits excellent durability at elevated temperatures. The HC-adsorbent is composed of a first zeolite of ZSM-5 of which the silica/alumina (SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) mole-ratio is 500 or more, and a second zeolite of Y-type zeolite of which the silica/alumina (SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) mole-ratio is 200 or more. The second zeolite mainly adsorbs higher hydrocarbon while the first zeolite mainly adsorbs lower hydrocarbon, thus enabling adsorption of many kinds of hydrocarbon.

A solid solution particle of oxides contains a solid solution of oxides in which one oxide is dissolved into the other oxide, and in which the degree of dissolution of one oxide into the other oxide is not less 50%, and in which an average diameter of crystallite is not more than 100 nm. The solid solution particle of oxides has small average diameter of a crystallite and large specific surface area, and it improves capacities such as an oxygen storage ability due to high degree of dissolution. A catalyst for purifying exhaust gases has excellent purifying performance by employing the solid solution comprising ceria and zirconia which has large OSC and high oxygen adsorption and discharge speed.

An electrically heating catalytic apparatus that quickly heats catalyst to an activation temperature even when the engine is started at a low temperature below the catalyst activation temperature. The apparatus employs an electrically conductive catalyst carrier that is electrically heated. The carrier is provided with local hot spots to be energized. Since the heat is locally generated, the heat capacity of the catalyst carrier is small to shorten a temperature increasing time.

A bent portion (adsorption box) is formed in part of an exhaust pipe connecting exhaust ports and a catalyst for purifying HC or the like in the exhaust gas, and a HC adsorbent of a honeycomb structure is placed forward with respect to the direction in which the exhaust gas travels straight without turning at the bent portion. The exhaust gas flowing from the exhaust ports, turns, and flows into the exhaust pipe, but HC having a large particle size travels straight along rectifier blades to be adsorbed by the HC adsorbent and held for a while. During such process, the catalyst connected to the exhaust pipe is heated up to be activated, thereby for purifying the HC or the like which is desorbed by the temperature rise of the adsorbent. Another HC catalyst may be carried in the front of the adsorbent that is easily heated to a high temperature, or an EGR passage including an EGR control valve may be connected downstream from the adsorbent.

An engine comprising an exhaust passage having therein a NO.sub.x absorbent which absorbs the NO.sub.x when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NO.sub.x absorbent is lean and releases the absorbed NO.sub.x when the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas is lowered. When the air-fuel ratio of air-fuel mixture fed into the engine cylinder is made a rich air-fuel ratio or the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, a secondary air is fed into the exhaust passage upstream of the NO.sub.x absorbent to make the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas lean.

An exhaust emission control apparatus includes an absorbent provided in an upstream portion of an exhaust passage of an engine to absorb hydrocarbon in exhaust gas passed through the exhaust passage at a temperature lower than a predetermined first temperature, the hydrocarbon being desorbed from the absorbent at a temperature higher than the first temperature, a catalytic converter provided in a downstream portion of the exhaust passage to purify hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas when a catalyst of the catalytic converter is active, the catalyst of the catalytic converter being activated at a temperature higher than a predetermined second temperature, the second temperature being higher than the first temperature, and a heating part for heating the catalytic converter to a temperature higher than the second temperature when the engine is in a prescribed starting condition and the absorbent is at a temperature higher than the first temperature, so that the hydrocarbon desorbed from the absorbent in the exhaust passage is purified by the activated catalyst of the catalytic converter.
