An airbag controller in a vehicle occupant protection device deploys airbags when one of a front-right acceleration sensor and a front-left acceleration sensor disposed on a front face of a vehicle detects an over-threshold acceleration exceeding a front threshold and one of a side-right acceleration sensor or a side-left acceleration sensor, which are disposed on a side face of the vehicle, detects an over-threshold acceleration exceeding a lateral threshold. A threshold acceleration storage device stores the front threshold and plural lateral thresholds that have respectively different values. An image processor processes image data from an in-vehicle camera and calculates the offset rate, an offset direction, a collision angle, a collision direction, and a relative speed at a timing just-before an offset collision between a subject vehicle and another vehicle. Based on a detection result, the airbag controller selects one of the plural lateral thresholds stored in the storage device.

Vehicle occupant protection device

A rollover detection apparatus for a vehicle includes a first vertical acceleration sensor, a second vertical acceleration sensor, and a rollover determining section. The first vertical acceleration sensor is mounted on the vehicle and outputs a first vertical acceleration signal indicative of vertical acceleration of the vehicle. The second vertical acceleration sensor is mounted on the vehicle and outputs a second vertical acceleration signal indicative of the vertical acceleration of the vehicle. The second vertical acceleration sensor is spaced away from the first vertical acceleration sensor in a lateral direction of the vehicle. The rollover determining section determines whether a rollover of the vehicle occurs based on a difference between the first and second vertical acceleration signals.

Rollover detection apparatus for vehicle

A collision detection device for a vehicle includes an air chamber space, a pressure sensor and a collision determination portion. The air chamber space is arranged in the vehicle, and a pressure therein is changed in accordance with a collision with the vehicle. The pressure sensor detects a pressure change in the air chamber space. The collision determination portion determines the collision with the vehicle. An output value of the pressure sensor is integrated by time to calculate an integration value, and the collision with the vehicle is determined based on a threshold value set with respect to the integration value, and the output value of the pressure sensor. Therefore, when the collision with the vehicle occurs, whether an occupant protection device should be activated can be determined promptly.

Collision detection device for vehicle

A determination device includes a single acceleration sensor that measures an acceleration of a vehicle and a determination circuit that is electrically connected with the acceleration sensor. The determination circuit has a plastic deformation pulse detection section and a severity determination section. The plastic deformation pulse detection section detects a plastic deformation pulse by separating the plastic deformation pulse from an acceleration waveform produced by the acceleration sensor. The severity determination section determines severity of a collision in a vehicle accident based on the detected plastic deformation pulse. A passive safety device is operated according to the determined severity.

Passive safety system and determination device

A determination device includes a single acceleration sensor for measuring an acceleration of a vehicle and a determination circuit for determining severity of a collision in an accident. A plastic deformation pulse detection section and an elastic deformation pulse detection section of the determination circuit detect a plastic deformation pulse and an elastic deformation pulse, respectively, from a waveform of measured accelerations. A severity determination section of the detection circuit determines the severity of a collision based on a correlation between a vehicle speed and a plastic deformation pulse, and a correlation between the vehicle speed, the plastic deformation pulse, and an elastic deformation pulse.
