Based on the first and second image signals, a special image, in which surface structure (surface blood vessels) and subsurface structure (subsurface blood vessels) are isolated from each other, is produced and displayed on a monitor.

An endoscope apparatus used in combination with a near infrared light irradiation unit that irradiates near infrared light on a target irradiation section. White light and the infrared light are irradiated on a target observation area including the target irradiation section. The imaging means spectroscopically images a reflected light image of the target observation area, which is outputted as a spectral image signal. The storage section includes estimated matrix data. The IR image signal generation means generates an IR image signal constituted by an estimated value of reflected light intensity of the near infrared light by performing a matrix operation on the spectral image signal using the estimated matrix data and spectral matrix data of the near infrared light. The color image signal generation means generates a color image signal based on the spectral image signal and the IR image signal.

The marker position-detecting device includes a pixel extracting device for extracting a group of pixels in the same color as the color of the marker part from the image and a calculation device for calculating a position of the barycenter of the group of pixels as a position of the marker part. The pixel extracting device extracts a pixel whose output value of a color component included in a color of the marker part among R, G, and B output values outputted from an image pickup device of the observation section is bigger than an output value of a color component that is not included in a color of the marker part by a predetermined threshold of the group of pixels.

OCT measuring that uses an optical fiber and is capable of preventing degradation in the resolution due to the wavelength dispersion of the optical fiber. For controlling the optical path length of the reference light in the OCT measuring, the following are provided: a diffraction grating element for dispersing the reference light; a collimator lens for collimating the dispersed reference light; and a reflection mirror for reflecting the reference light transmitted through the collimator lens back to the collimator lens and inputting to the diffraction grating element. The reflection mirror pivots on a position offset from the optical axis of the collimator lens. The diffraction grating element is tilted with respect to the optical axis of the collimator lens to compensate for the wavelength dispersion of the optical fiber.

The low coherence light has wavelength properties suited for the light absorbing properties, the diffusion properties, and the dispersion properties of living tissue. A light dividing means divides the low coherence light into a measuring light beam, which is irradiated onto a measurement target via an optical probe, and a reference light beam that propagates toward an optical path length adjusting means. A multiplexing means multiplexes a reflected light beam, which is the measuring light beam reflected at a predetermined depth of the measurement target, and the reference light beam, to form coherent light. A coherent light detecting means detects the optical intensity of the multiplexed coherent light. An image obtaining means performs image processes, and displays an optical tomographic image on a display apparatus.

A confocal microscope apparatus capable of rapidly obtaining a tomographic image using OCT measuring. The confocal microscope apparatus for obtaining a tomographic image of a measuring object includes a light modulating section that modulates the frequency of the reference light. The light modulating section includes: a diffraction grating element for dispersing the reference light; a collimator lens for collimating the reference light dispersed by the diffraction grating element; and a reflection mirror for reflecting the reference light transmitted through the collimator lens back to the collimator lens and inputting to the diffraction grating element. The reflection mirror is pivoted on a position which is offset from the optical axis of the collimator lens.
