A composition comprising at least 60% by weight, based on the weight of the composition, of a cyclopentanone or cyclopentanol compound having 2,5-dicyclopentylidene substituents, 2,5-dicyclopentyl substituents or 2-cyclopentylidene-5-cyclopentyl substituents. This composition is useful as perfume emitting floral fragrance. 2,5-Dicyclopentylidenecyclopentane (compound 4) is prepared by reaction of 2-cyclopentylidenecyclopentanone with cyclopentanone. 2,5-Dicyclopentylcyclopentanone (compound 5) and 2,5-dicyclopentylidenecyclopentanol (compound 6) are prepared by reduction of compound 4. 2,5-Dicyclopentylcyclopentanol (compound 7) is prepared by reduction of compound 5 or compound 6.

The present invention provides plant growth promoters each comprising, as an active ingredient, a jasmonic acid derivative represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a pentyl group or a pentenyl group and R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. These promoters exhibit excellent growth promotion effects particularly on root vegetables, potatoes (tuber crops), cereals, fruit vegetables, fruit trees, flowers and ornamental plants and industrial crops.

The invention discloses a process for preparing a 2,3-di-substituted cyclopentanone mixture containing an enriched cis-2,3-di-substituted cyclopentanone which comprises heating a trans-2,3-di-substituted cyclopentanone in the presence of 100 ppm or less (weight basis) of a metal carbonate based on the cyclopentanone. The invention also discloses a fragrant composition comprising 20 to 50 wt % of 2,3-di-substituted cis-methyl (dihydro)jasmonates and 80 to 50 wt % of 2,3-di-substituted (dihydro) trans-methyl (dihydro)jasmonates. The fragrant composition has jasmine flower-like fragrance.
