A sample detection device includes a disk substrate which allows a light beam to be transmitted, and the substrate has flow paths each of which allows polymers to be injected therein, wherein the substrate further includes a guiding groove, provided in a perpendicular direction with respect to a longitudinal direction of each flow path, along which the light beam for detecting polymers scans. According to the sample detection device, it is possible to efficiently detect many kinds of polymers in accordance with respective separation rates of the polymers.

The foregoing structure having the non-magnetic metal element layer of a large average surface roughness Ra brings about a great pinning effect onto the amorphous magnetic layer, thereby forming magnetic bits under stable conditions when carrying out a high density recording.

An optical reproducing device according to the present invention detects mean amplitude values of short marks and long marks, which are recorded marks for reproducing power control, by means of a short mark level detecting circuit and a long mark level detecting circuit. Then a differential amplifier compares a ratio between these two mean amplitude values with a standard value, and outputs the result of this comparison. Thereafter, a reproducing power control circuit controls reproducing power of a semiconductor laser such that the absolute value of this comparison result is reduced. Since mean values of the amplitude values of the short marks and long marks are detected, the detection results are very accurate, and the precision of control of reproducing power can be greatly improved.

In this manner, movement of magnetic domain walls of the amorphous magnetic layer is effectively limited by minute irregularities on a surface of the underlayer. This realizes a stable formation of a minute recording mark. This realizes recording having a sufficient signal quality, even when the high-density recording is performed by forming such a minute recording mark that a shortest length of the recording mark is less than 100 nm. Moreover, this allows the magnetic recording medium to have a simplified layer structure. Further, a magnetic recording apparatus magnetically records data onto a magnetic recording medium having the above arrangement, by heating a portion of the magnetic layer by radiating a light beam locally, and by applying a magnetic field on at least part of the portion of the magnetic layer on which the light beam is radiated. This provides a magnetic recording apparatus for high-density recording.

An optical recording medium in accordance with the present invention is provided with a substrate, a mask layer, provided on the substrate, whose index of refraction changes due to light or heat of the substrate, and a recording layer that is provided away from the mask layer by a distance that is not more than a distance which allows the near-field light to reach. The mask layer generates a minute opaque region in a light spot and the recording layer is a magneto-optical layer. An optical recording and reproduction apparatus in accordance with the present invention uses the optical recording medium. An optical device and a recording medium are provided with a recording layer for recording information by radiation of light, and a mask layer which is formed closely to the recording layer, reduces its transmittance of light due to light or heat, and transmits light to the recording layer by using a near-field effect. An optical reproducing and recording method includes the steps of: emitting a laser beam onto the mask layer, generating a near field around an area of the mask layer that has transmittance being reduced by the laser beam, and reproducing or recording optical information in the recording layer by interaction between the near field and the recording layer. A light spot detects a focus offset amount based on an amount of variation of a focus error signal when a light spot passes a boundary between a land section and a groove section adjacent to the land section on an optical disk. Specifically, an amount of variations in the focus error signal at a center of a land section at a time the light spot passes the boundary between the land and the groove adjacent to the land is detected as a focus offset amount, and an amount of variation in the focus error signal at a center of the groove section is detected as a focus offset amount for the groove sections, thereby providing an optical information recording/reproducing device which permits recording/reproducing information on and from a tracking area of an optical disk under just-in-focus conditions without increasing a cost of the device nor being affected by an error due to changes over time or variations in optical disks.
