A packet transfer scheme in a network system capable of realizing a high speed, large capacity inter-network communication under an internet environment. A network interconnection apparatus (router) has a memory for storing a correspondence relationship between a virtual connection used in receiving a packet from one logical network and a virtual connection used in transmitting a packet to another logical network, and a transfer at a datalink layer is carried out according to the registered correspondence relationship, to effectively form a bypass pipe capable of transferring a packet by an datalink layer level processing alone over a plurality of networks from the transmission terminal to the destination terminal, so that a high speed packet transfer between networks can be realized.

A packet transfer scheme for transferring packets at a boundary of a plurality networks is disclosed. A network interconnection apparatus (router) communicates with a previous hop node in one of the plurality of networks by a first control message including a first identification information for identifying an upstream path from the previous hop node and a specification information for specifying a group of packets to be transferred on the upstream path, and with a next hop node in another of the plurality of networks by a second control message including a second identification information for identifying a downstream path to the next hop node and a specification information for specifying a group of packets to be transferred on the downstream path. Then, the network interconnection apparatus stores a first identifier at a layer lower than layer of the upstream path and a second identifier at a layer lower than layer of the downstream path corresponding to the upstream path, according to the first and second control messages, and transfers a packet from the upstream path to the corresponding downstream path, referring to the memory.

ATM communication system capable of realizing a high speed and efficient datagram delivery for the connection-less communication among the terminals in the ATM network. In the system formed by a plurality of ATM networks inter-networking with each other, each network containing a plurality of terminals, the ATM networks with connection-less service function units for managing a connection-less datagram transmission are provided in the ATM networks, and the connection-less datagram transmission from each terminal to a destination terminal is performed by resolving a connection identifier for identifying an ATM connection connected to a destination side connection-less service function unit associated with a destination side ATM network containing the destination terminal, and transmitting datagram from said each terminal to the destination side connection-less service function unit through the ATM connection identified by the resolved connection identifier.

In the bridge device, a MAC frame transmitted from the interface with respect to the ATM network is transmitted selectively to either a point-to-point ATM connection interconnecting this bridge device and another bridge device or a multicast ATM connection interconnecting this bridge device and other bridge devices, while MAC addresses and identifiers of point-to-point ATM connections are registered in correspondences in a table. In a case this bridge device directly accommodates emulation hosts for emulating another non-ATM network through ATM connections having this bridge device as a starting point, a type of a MAC frame entered from the interface with respect to the ATM network is identified as either a MAC frame transmitted from any of the emulation hosts or a MAC frame transmitted from another bridge device connected with this bridge device by a bridge connection through the ATM network, and the MAC frame entered from the interface is transmitted selectively to ATM connections of the ATM network according to the identified type.

A method of controlling data transmission in the ATM network which establishes simple modes of a network control for a case in which a plurality of cell loss priority levels are involved within the cells of a single virtual channel. The method includes the steps of declaring the traffic characteristics for either the loss intolerable cells only, or the loss intolerable cells and the loss tolerable cells separately, and carrying out at the network a connection admission control by estimating a cell loss rate on a basis of the declared traffic characteristics, such that the cell loss rate for either the loss intolerable cells only, or the loss intolerable cells and the loss tolerable cells separately in the multiplexed virtual channels is secured by the network on a basis of the estimated cell loss rate.
