An electrostatic capacitance detection device includes a first electrode, and a second electrode at least a part of which is opposed to the first electrode across a transport path extending in a transport direction in which a detection target having a sheet shape is transported. The first electrode and the second electrode extend in a cross direction intersecting the transport direction and have mutually different shapes. Alternatively, the electrostatic capacitance detection device further includes a first floating electrode disposed on the side of the first electrode opposite to the transport path, and a second floating electrode disposed on the side of the second electrode opposite to the transport path. Alternatively, at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode is provided with a first electric field adjuster or a second electric field adjuster.

Mechanisms are provided for performing a data replication operation to replicate data from a first data processing system to a second data processing system. The mechanisms store a compression ratio history in association with data to be replicated. The compression ratio history stores one or more compression ratios for one or more previously executed data replication operations. The mechanisms determine whether a data compression operation should be applied to the data for a current data replication operation based on the compression ratio(s) in the compression ratio history. In response to determining that data compression should be applied to the data, the data compression operation is performed and the compressed data is replicated to the second data processing system. In response to determining that data compression should not be applied, the data is replicated without compression.

A system and method for adding a migration file group to a hierarchical storage management (HSM) system for data co-location are presented. A file group attribute may be automatically added to one or more files in the HSM system to enable one or more applications to co-locate data. The one or more files, having a similar file group attribute, may be migrated from one or more storage devices in a first tier in the HSM system to a tape storage device in an nth tier of the HSM system to enable recalling of the one or more files in the HSM system.

A mechanism is provided in a data processing system for asynchronous replication in a hierarchical storage management integrated storage system. For a given file to be replicated from a primary storage system to a remote storage system, the primary storage system accesses the remote storage system to determine file existence and migration status at the remote storage system for the given file. Responsive to the primary storage system determining that the given file exists and has been migrated from first tier storage to second tier storage at the remote storage system, the primary storage system determines a first performance penalty for file recall and a second performance penalty for sending excess data from the primary storage system to the remote storage system. Responsive to the primary storage system determining that the first performance penalty is greater than the second performance penalty, the primary storage system sends whole file data for the given file to the remote storage system to replicate the given file at the remote storage system.

Improving performance of asynchronous replication in HSM integrated storage systems

A system and method for preventing inefficient recalls in a hierarchical storage management (HSM) system are presented. Difference data may be received for updating a target file stored in a first storage system having at least an upper storage layer and a lower tape layer. The difference data may be stored in a stub file located on the upper storage layer and corresponding to the target file in the first storage system located on the lower tape layer. A recall operation may be executed that copies the target file from the lower tape layer to the upper storage layer. The difference data stored in the stub file may be copied to the target file copied onto the upper storage layer from the lower tape layer according to one or more predetermined events.

The first data may be copied in the second storage based on the deduplication information.
