A slurry for forming an insulating layer of the present invention includes heat-resistant insulating fine particles, a thickening agent, and a dispersion medium. The insulating fine particles are dispersed in the dispersion medium. The slurry for forming an insulating layer has a viscosity of 5 to 500 mPa&#xb7;s. The proportion of particles with a particle size of 1 &#x3bc;m or less in the insulating fine particles is 30 vol % or more and the proportion of particles with a particles size of 3 &#x3bc;m or more in the insulating fine particles is 10 vol % or less. An electrochemical device of the present invention includes a separator for an electrochemical device of the present invention that is produced using the slurry for forming an electrochemical device of the present invention.

There is provided a lithium ion secondary battery with a high capacity and having excellent cycle characteristics. The lithium ion secondary battery, including a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator and a nonaqueous electrolyte liquid. Here, the positive electrode comprises a positive electrode material in which a surface of particles of a positive electrode active material is coated with an Al-containing oxide. The Al-containing oxide has an average coating thickness of 5 to 50 nm. The positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode material comprises a lithium cobalt oxide comprising Co and at least one kind of an element Mselected from the group consisting of Mg, Zr, Ni, Mn, Ti and Al. The negative electrode comprises a material S including SiO(0.5&#x2266;x&#x2266;1.5) as a negative electrode active material, wherein in 100 mass % of a total of the negative electrode active material included in the negative electrode, the materials S is included in the negative electrode active material at a content of 10 mass % or more.

The semiconductor laser drive control section uses a timing with which the semiconductor laser drive control section receives from the comparison circuit an output indicating that the voltage output from the photodiode is larger than the reference voltage to generate a light emission start timing with which the semiconductor laser starts to emit laser light based on an image signal.

The present invention provides a lithium secondary battery using a separator including a porous film formed by binding inorganic oxide particles together with a binder. The inorganic oxide particles are treated so that an amount of alkali metal elements eluted therefrom when they are immersed in ion exchange water is reduced to 1000 ppm or less. As a result, it is possible to provide a lithium secondary battery with a high degree of reliability, whose characteristics deteriorate less when it is used or stored for an extended period.

An electrode material for an electrochemical device comprising a composite of a particulate conductive material and a metal oxide is prepared by mixing and dispersing the particulate conductive material with a colloidal solution of an oxide of an element in a range of from Group 3 to Group 12 in the fourth, fifth and sixth periods of the Periodic Table and heating the mixture. This composite has a high capacity even at a high current density and good filling properties, and is useful as an electrode material for an electrochemical device such as a lithium secondary battery or an electrochemical capacitor. When the electrode material comprising this composite is used, an electrode can be produced without any binder, and the electrochemical device having good output characteristics can be constructed.
