An apparatus for manufacturing a complete wire harness from a plurality of wire harnesses have a first transferring unit, an inserting unit and a removing unit. The first transferring unit transfers a wire clamping bar, which holds a partial harness having a plurality of electric wires, to a wire-harness fabricating station. The inserting unit inserts terminals disposed at ends of the plurality of electric wires into predetermined terminal accommodating chambers of predetermined connectors set on a connector receiving jig. The removing unit removes the emptied wire clamping bar.

Apparatus for manufacturing a complete wire harness from a plurality of partial harnesses

A wire measuring and cutting apparatus is provided with an U-turn guide section which serves to guide a wire W being fed into a guide passage for bending the wire W in a substantially U-shaped manner. In the section , a movable guide part is constituted by a pair of guide pieces which are pivoted so as to open and close together. The U-turn guide section is provided with a displacement mechanism . The mechanism can maintain the pair of guide pieces in the closed position. While, the mechanism can displace the guide pieces for the opened position together with feeding inertia of the wire W in process of measuring the length of the wire W. With this structure, the guide pieces can be opened at high speed due to the feeding inertia in addition to the driving force of the mechanism to open the pieces and there is no need to stop feeding the wire W during the measurement of the wire W.

A method of automatically inserting terminals with wires into desired terminal accommodating cavities in a connector housing after putting neighboring wires aside, and a wire sweeping arm and a driving device for the sweeping arm. The method includes the steps of: grasping the terminal with wire by terminal supporting hands and wire supporting hands; moving the wire sweeping arm in the direction that the wire sweeping arm sweep wires which are already accommodated in neighboring terminal accommodating cavities, the wire sweeping arm being disposed between the terminal accommodating cavities and the terminal supporting hands so as to move back and forth; moving the wire supporting hands and the terminal supporting hands toward the connector housing to insert the terminal with wire into the terminal accommodating cavity.

Apparatus for inserting terminal with wire and driving a wire sweeping arm

A wire harness is made up of a plurality of partial harnesses. Each of the partial harnesses is arranged such that opposite end portions of a plurality of electric wires having terminals at ends thereof are retained in advance in U-shapes with predetermined intervals provided so as to correspond to a plurality of connectors into which the terminals are inserted, by a plurality of wire clamps juxtaposed at equal pitches on a wire clamping bar. The terminals at the ends of the plurality of electric wires in each of the partial harnesses are inserted into terminal accommodating chambers of predetermined connectors selected from the plurality of connectors, thereby aggregating the partial harnesses into a combined unit.

A method and an apparatus for smoothly and securely inserting a terminal connected to an electric wire into a terminal accommodating chamber within a connector housing from an opening in a notched rear end portion of the housing. The housing has an interior divided by partition walls into a plurality of terminal accommodating chambers each having a rear end defining an opening through which the terminal can be inserted, a notched shoulder portion formed in each partition wall at at least one of joints between the partition wall and top and bottom walls of the housing, and a terminal retaining cover capable of opening away from and closing onto the notched shoulder portions. A guide wall capable of engaging with the notched shoulder portions when the terminal retaining cover is open, thereby defining a flame-shaped terminal insertion opening, allows the terminal to be inserted through the terminal insertion opening. Thus, the terminal being inserted is prevented from being caught on the top or bottom wall of the housing.

Described herein is a method and an apparatus which permit terminal-carrying ends of wire units to be automatically inserted into a connector housing in a reliable manner almost irrespective of the type and size of the terminal elements to be inserted. This is attained by providing a transfer plate which is movable to a position confronting a selected one of a plurality of connector housings set on an assembling table. An assembling head is mounted on the transfer plate movably in vertical directions and also in directions toward and away from the transfer plate. A wire-embracing terminal portion and a wire portion of the wire unit are gripped by means of openable and closable paired terminal gripping pawls and wire gripping pawls which are vertically movably supported on the assembling head. The posture of the terminal element is adjusted by lowering a terminal presser plate which is vertically movably provided between the paired terminal gripping pawls. The assembling head is moved toward the connector housing to insert the terminal element into the connector housing. The terminal gripping pawls are opened and lifted up as soon as an electric contact portion of the terminal element is inserted into a terminal compartment of the connector housing.

An apparatus for putting the above method into practice comprises: a rotatable wire bending head for holding the front end of a continuous wire by wire clamp plates and bending the wire in a U-shape; a wire pulling head for engaging or holding the U-shaped portion and pulling it in the axial direction of the wire to pay out a predetermined amount thereof; and a cutting blade for cutting the U-bent, pulled wire at a position almost opposite to the front end.
