Disclosed is a method for detecting abnormality in a reducing agentreplenished to a reducing agent tankin an exhaust emission control device for reduction and removal of NOthrough addition of the reducing agentfrom the tankto a selective reduction catalystincorporated in an exhaust pipe. Presence or absence of NHslip is determined when a lowering of NOremoval rate is detected. When the presence of the NHslip is detected, it is determined that the selective reduction catalystis deteriorated; when the absence of the NHslip is determined, it is determined that a dilute reducing agent or/and a material other than the reducing agent are replenished into the tank.

Method for detecting abnormality in reducing agent

Provided is a method of diagnosing regeneration failure of an exhaust emission control device including filter regenerating means for forcibly heating a particulate filterso as to burn off captured particulates. An exhaust flow rate to the particulate filterand a differential pressure between entry and exit sides of the particulate filterare obtained to calculate a gradient of change in the differential pressure relative to change in the exhaust flow rate. The calculated gradient is compared with a predetermined reference gradient to diagnose the particulate filteras having regeneration failure when the calculated gradient exceeds the reference gradient.

An engine intake system is provided with a controller for calculating an idling intake air quantity on the basis of an air flow rate measured by an airflow meter and determining disconnection of a blow-by gas return tube in a case where a value obtained by subtracting the idling intake air quantity from a stored normal intake air quantity exceeds a threshold.

Replenishment of the reducing agent to the tank is detected to wait elapse of a removal-rate stabilization period, i.e., a period from the detected replenishment to stabilization of the NOremoval rate. It is determined that a dilute reducing agent or/and a different material are replenished into the tank if an abnormal lowering of a measured NOremoval rate is detected during a determination period after the removal-rate stabilization period.

A controller is constructed such that fuel addition by a fuel injection device is automatically conducted when a predetermined time has passed with a diesel engine being in an idling state, and without a regeneration button being manually operated under a condition of a particulate deposition amount being estimated by the controller on the basis of a pressure signal from a pressure sensor to be within a manual regeneration range over said automatic regeneration range.
