A plasma display driving method capable of displaying a vigorous image having enhanced maximum luminance and contrast. For this purpose, one field is divided into a plurality of sub-fields each including a sustain period. In the sustain period, the number of sustain pulses obtained by multiplying a proportionality factor by a brightness weight set for each of the sub-fields are applied to display electrode pairs to generate sustaining discharge in discharge cells having generated addressing discharge therein. Thus, the total number of the sustain pulses in one field period can be changed. When a predetermined image meeting predetermined conditions is displayed, the total number of the sustain pulses in one field period is made larger than those in the case where the other normal images are displayed.

Plasma display panel driving method and plasma display device

An image display device includes a pair of sustain pulse generators for applying either a first sustain pulse or a second sustain pulse to the display electrodes. The first and second sustain pulses generate a sustain discharge twice and once, respectively, in discharge cells when the voltage applied between the display electrodes changes. The application of the first sustain pulse is performed by generating a first discharge by applying a voltage to one of the display electrodes using the clamp corresponding to the one of the display electrodes, and then generating a second discharge by applying a voltage to the other of the display electrodes using the clamp corresponding to the other of the display electrodes. The application of the second sustain pulse is performed by generating a first discharge by applying a voltage to each of the display electrodes using the clamps corresponding to each of the display electrodes.

Image display device

A first group of data drivers is connected to a sub-field processor, a first power recovery circuit, and a PDP, and a second group of data drivers is connected to a sub-field processor, a second power recovery circuit, and a PDP. The first and second groups of data drivers apply to the PDP data pulses that differ in phases. The first and second power recovery circuits generate a voltage for generating the data pulses to the first and second groups of data drivers due to LC resonance, and discharge and recover charges to and from the PDP. Recovery potentials of recovery capacitors in the first and second power recovery circuits are changed depending on the number of times of switching between discharges and non-discharges of discharge cells in the PDP.

Display device and drive method thereof

An image display apparatus comprises, in a vacuum container whose inside is kept under vacuum, a fluorescent layer, an electron emission source having a plurality of electron sources, a deflecting electrode to deflect electron beams emitted from the electron emission source, and an ultrafocusing electrode to focus the electron beams and land the focused electron beams on predetermined positions of the fluorescent layer. The ultrafocusing electrode is arranged between the electron emission source and the fluorescent layer while the deflecting electrode is arranged between the electron emission source and the ultrafocusing electrode, so that the fluorescent layer is illuminated by the electron beams. If the landing position of the electron beam is deviated because of errors such as manufacturing errors in assembling the components into the image display apparatus, the deviation is minimized and an image display apparatus with high resolution can be obtained.

Image display apparatus

An image display device has a plurality of electrodes that control a beam between a group of linear cathodes (,) and a screen (,) with a phosphor layer, and is provided with a circuit (,) for generating a beam track offset signal, which generates a signal for slightly oscillating one of the beams horizontally, a PIN photodiode (,) for detecting the emission amount of the phosphor layer for this beam, a comparator (,) for generating a beam irradiation position misalignment signal based on the detected emission amount, an integrating circuit (,) for generating a beam position control signal in correspondence with the beam irradiation position misalignment signal; and a horizontal deflection electrode driving circuit (,) for driving a horizontal deflection electrode (,) in accordance with the beam position control signal. With this configuration, misalignments of the position of the beam spot and the phosphor stripes on the screen, which are caused for various reasons, can be suppressed, and an image display device is obtained, in which a deterioration of the image quality, such as color misalignments, does not occur.
