A cutting insert includes a rake face, a flank face, and a cutting edge constituted of a ridgeline between the rake face and the flank face. The cutting edge has a first cutting edge portion for corner processing, a second cutting edge portion for low cut-in pulling processing, a third cutting edge portion for high cut-in pulling processing, a fourth cutting edge portion for finished-surface processing, a first connection cutting edge portion, a second connection cutting edge portion, and a third connection cutting edge portion. The fourth cutting edge portion is disposed between the first cutting edge portion and the second cutting edge portion. The second cutting edge portion is disposed between the fourth cutting edge portion and the third cutting edge portion. Each of the first cutting edge portion, the second cutting edge portion, and the fourth cutting edge portion has a curved shape.

A cutting tool comprises a substrate and a coating film disposed on the substrate, wherein the coating film comprises a first layer and a second layer; the first layer has a hardness Hof 25 GPa or more and 40 GPa or less; the second layer has a hardness Hsatisfying 0.5×H≤H≤0.9×H; and at least one of a ratio I/(I+I+I) of Iof (200) plane to a sum of X-ray diffraction intensity Iof (200) plane, X-ray diffraction intensity Iof (111) plane, and X-ray diffraction intensity Iof (220) plane of the coating film, a ratio I/(I+I+I) of Ito the sum, and a ratio I/(I+I+I) of Ito the sum is 0.45 or more.

A cubic boron nitride sintered material comprising cubic boron nitride grains, a binder phase, and a void, in which a percentage of the cubic boron nitride grains based on the total of the cubic boron nitride grains and the binder phase is 40 vol % to 70 vol %, a percentage of the binder phase based on the total of the cubic boron nitride grains and the binder phase is 30 vol % to 60 vol %, the binder phase includes 10 vol % to 100 vol % of aluminum oxide grains, an average grain size of the aluminum oxide grains is 50 to 250 nm, the cubic boron nitride sintered material comprises 0.001 vol % to 0.100 vol % of one or more first voids, and at least one portion of each of the first voids is in contact with the aluminum oxide grains.

A cutting tool, including a cutting edge portion composed of a cubic boron nitride sintered material, wherein the cutting edge portion has: a flank face; a rake face contiguous to the flank face; and a cutting edge positioned on a ridgeline of the flank face and the rake face, an arithmetical mean height Sa of the flank face is 0.5 &#x3bc;m or more and 3.0 &#x3bc;m or less, the Sa is measured in accordance with ISO25178-2:2012, and an oxygen concentration of the flank face is 10 mass % or more and 50 mass % or less.

A cubic boron nitride sintered material includes: 20 to 80 volume % of cBN grains; and 20 to 80 volume % of a binder phase, wherein the binder phase includes first binder grains and second binder grains, in each of the first binder grains, a ratio of the number of atoms of the first metal element to a total of the number of atoms of the titanium and the number of atoms of the first metal element is more than or equal to 0.01% and less than 10%, in each of the second binder grains, this ratio is more than or equal to 10% and less than or equal to 80%, and in an X-ray diffraction spectrum of the cubic boron nitride sintered material, one or both of conditions 1 and 2 are satisfied.

A cubic boron nitride sintered material includes: 20 t to 80 volume % of cBN grains; and 20 to 80 volume % of a binder phase, wherein the binder phase includes first binder grains and second binder grains, in each of the first binder grains, a ratio of the number of atoms of the first metal element to a total of the number of atoms of the titanium and the first metal element is more than or equal to 0.01% and less than 10%, in each of the second binder grains, the ratio is more than or equal to 10% and less than or equal to 80%, and an average grain size of the second binder grains is more than or equal to 0.2 &#x3bc;m and less than or equal to 1 &#x3bc;m.

A cubic boron nitride sintered material includes: more than 80 volume % and less than 100 volume % of cubic boron nitride grains; and more than 0 volume % and less than 20 volume % of a binder phase. The binder phase includes: at least one selected from a group consisting of a simple substance, an alloy, and an intermetallic compound selected from a group consisting of a group 4 element, a group 5 element, a group 6 element in a periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel. A dislocation density of the cubic boron nitride grains is more than or equal to 3&#xd7;10/mand less than or equal to 1&#xd7;10/m.

A cubic boron nitride sintered material includes: more than 80 volume % and less than 100 volume % of cubic boron nitride grains; and more than 0 volume % and less than 20 volume % of a binder phase. The binder phase includes: at least one selected from a group consisting of a simple substance, an alloy, and an intermetallic compound selected from a group consisting of a group 4 element, a group 5 element, a group 6 element in a periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel. A dislocation density of the cubic boron nitride grains is more than or equal to 1&#xd7;10/mand less than or equal to 1&#xd7;10/m.

A cutting insert has a surface that relates to cutting, the surface comprising cBN sintered material, ceramics, or cermet. The cutting insert comprises: a rake face; a flank face; a chamfer located between the rake face and the flank face; and a cutting edge formed by a ridgeline at which the flank face and the chamfer intersect. The cutting edge comprises a cutting edge portion for push cutting, a cutting edge portion for pull cutting, and a connecting cutting edge portion located between the cutting edge portion for push cutting and the cutting edge portion for pull cutting. In the chamfer located along the cutting edge, the chamfer located along the connecting cutting edge portion has a minimum width.
