A distributor for use in an electronic ignition system, in which a rotating electrode is formed of a metallic material, and a dielectric material is provided connected thereto, contacting through a very small area at a portion apart from the sparking surface of the metallic member. The dielectric constant of the dielectric member is larger than that of a rotating body holding the rotating electrode.

Distributor in ignition system for internal combustion engine

A small, light and low cost ignition distributor having improved rotary detection accuracy can be realized. A pole piece having a pickup coil wound on it and bypass pole pieces having no pickup coil are arranged on the ignition distributor. The distance between the pole piece having a pickup coil and the bypass pole pieces is about 1.5 times as long as the distance between protrusions formed on the peripheral portion of a rotary body. When the distance between the pole piece having a pickup coil and a reluctor is minimum, the distance between the bypass pole pieces and the reluctor is maximum, and the linkage of magnetic flux of the pickup coil is maximum. When the distance between the pole piece having a pickup coil and the reluctor is maximum, the distance between the bypass pole pieces and the reluctor is minimum, and the magnetic flux bypasses the pole piece having a pickup coil and passes through the bypass pole pieces. Accordingly, the change of the magnetic flux passing through the pickup coil can be made to be large, and the change of the generated voltage can be made to be larger so that the rotary detection accuracy is improved.

A distributor comprising a rotor electrode, a plurality of distributor electrodes, a housing supporting movably the rotor electrode, an ignition coil which supplies the electric current of high voltage to the rotor electrode, and an ignition coil supporter which is fixed to the housing and on which the ignition coil is mounted so that the ignition coil is accommodated by the distributor, wherein the natural frequency of the ignition coil supporter is greater than the explosion frequency of the combustion engine and a thermoplastic characteristic of the ignition coil seupporter is less than that of a plastic resin cap covering a spark clearance between the rotor electrode and each of the distributor electrodes.

A distributor for an internal combustion engine includes a housing in which a distributor rotor is supported on a shaft for distributing a generated high voltage to ignition plugs through electrodes, and a distributor cap covers electrical devices of the distributor. The distributor cap of an insulating material is composed of an inner distributor cap and outer distributor cap of a high strength material space is formed between the walls of outer distributor cap and inner distributor cap for preventing dewing. A number of T-shaped projections may be provided along an inner surface of the outer distributor cap for defining the space, with the projections being fixed to the inner distributor cap or a spacer may be sandwiched between the inner and outer distributor caps.

An ignition distributor for an internal combustion engine with reduced electric discharge energy and suppressed radio noise generation comprises a rotor electrode capable of rotary motion and a plurality of stationary electrodes arranged substantially in a circle around the rotor electrode through an electric discharge clearance therebetween, where the rotor electrode is made of a sintered mixture comprising zirconium oxide and an electroconductive inorganic compound having a specific resistance of not more than 10.sup.6 .OMEGA.cm as main components. The sintered mixture can be ZrO.sub.2 and an oxide selected from ZnO, NiO and CoO; or ZrO.sub.2, aluminum oxide and an oxide selected from ZnO, CoO, Al.sub.2 TiO.sub.5 and SrTiO.sub.3 or a carbide selected from ZrC, TiC and TaC.

To reduce the breakdown potential magnitude between the output tip surface of an ignition distributor rotor output segment and each of the output terminals of the distributor cap, the rotor output segment is made of a low thermally conductive material 0.1 mm to 1.00 mm thick, and a layer of a silicone dielectric material such as a silicone plate, viz., a plate including at least a sheet of silicone varnish-containing glass cloth, is secured to at least a portion of at least one of the top and bottom surface areas of the rotor output segment.

In a distributor for internal combustion engine, the rotor electrode is formed of a first electrode of a conductive metal, and a second electrode electrically connected to the first electrode. The second electrode is formed of the mixture of fine particles of resistive and conductive materials. The first electrode is made in contact with the center carbon of the distributor, and the second electrode is opposed to the stationary electrode of the distributor. The minimum length from the discharge end surface of the second electrode to the first connection between the first and second electrodes is selected to be 5 mm or above.

A distributor for distributing high-voltage pulses generated by an ignition coil to individual ignition plugs through a center electrode, a rotor electrode and a plurality of side electrodes disposed opposite to the rotor electrode with a discharge gap defined therebetween, in which the discharge-participating area of the rotor electrode and/or each side electrode includes finely interspersed conductive regions and high-resistance regions thereby reducing the discharge voltage at the discharge gap between the rotor electrode and each side electrode for suppressing generation of radio noises. The discharge participating areas of the rotor and stationary electrodes may be formed of ferrite.

A distributor for internal combustion engines is disclosed, in which at least the spark discharge portion of the rotor electrode and/or each of the fixed electrodes is made of an alloy containing silicon, thus suppressing the generation of radio noise.

There is disclosed an ignition timing control system for an internal combustion engine which comprises a reference ignition signal generator, advance means for leading the ignition timing according to the number of engine revolutions, control means for controlling the ignition timing according to the pressure change in the intake pipe which varies with the engine load, a retard circuit for shifting the ignition timing by a selected retard angle with respect to the ignition timing which is determined by said advance means, and means for controlling the electric elements in said retard means to determine the retard angle thereof so as to cancel variation in the ignition timing due to atmospheric pressure change.

A device for electrically connecting a spark plug to a high-voltage cable supplying a high voltage to the spark plug from an ignition coil, comprising a connecting member whose maximum length in the axial direction of the spark plug is selected to be not longer than 25 mm so as to reduce the antenna effect in the area including the connecting member thereby minimizing undesirable radiation of noise which provides radio interference against other electronic units.

This invention relates to an ignition device of the type wherein a pickup coil for making a signal synchronous with the engine revolution is disposed within a distributor, an amplifier circuit for amplifying the output of the pickup coil and a power transistor for controlling the primary coil current of an ignition coil are arranged in a circuit unit under hybrid IC and chip states respectively, and the circuit unit is mounted on a side surface of a housing of the distributor. A highly waterproof structure has been found necessary in order that the insulation between the housing and pickup terminals as well as connectors for coupling the pickup coil and the amplifier circuit and the insulation between the terminals may be prevented from degrading due to moisture. To this end, a protuberance which projects from the circuit unit into the housing is disposed in a manner to surround the pickup terminals.
