The present disclosure generally relates to the structure of a perpendicular magnetic write head for use in a magnetic disk drive. A shingled-microwave-assisted magnetic recording head for use in a high-areal-density hard disk drive comprises a trailing shield, a flare-shaped main pole, one or more side shields, a spin torque oscillator, and two asymmetric side gaps, where one side gap has a smaller width than the other side gap. The spin torque oscillator shares a first continuous edge with the main pole on a side adjacent the side gap having the smaller width and shares a second continuous edge adjacent a media facing surface. The angle of the spin torque oscillator and the main pole formed by the media facing surface and the narrow side gap is greater than about 90&#xb0;.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole adapted for producing a writing magnetic field, a trailing shield positioned on a trailing side of the main pole, wherein a trailing gap is positioned between the trailing shield and the main pole, and a side shield positioned on at least one side of the main pole in a cross-track direction, wherein a side gap is positioned between the side shield and the main pole, wherein the main pole has an asymmetrical shape at an air bearing surface (ABS) thereof. A magnetic write head for magnetic data recording that has a magnetic write pole and a magnetic side shield structure, wherein the flare angle and bevel angle of the write pole are different from the flare angle and bevel angle of the magnetic side shield structure. The magnetic side shield has a flare angle that is greater than that of the write pole, and has a bevel angle that is smaller than that of the write pole. This advantageously provides a strong write field, while also preventing adjacent track and far track interference. The write head can include a bi-layer non-magnetic side gap structure, wherein one layer of the bi-layer side gap structure has a uniform thickness and the other layer has a non-uniform thickness.

The trailing gap extends laterally beyond the side gap layers, and a convex bump is formed at an edge of the magnetic shield at a location near the trailing end of each of the side gap layers.

In one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic head includes a main magnetic pole, a side shield disposed on both sides of the main magnetic pole in a track width direction, the side shield including a material having a saturation magnetic flux density of no greater than about 1.0 T, and a trailing shield disposed on a trailing side of the main magnetic pole, wherein the trailing shield and the side shield are physically separated from one another. In another embodiment, the side shield includes a first magnetic film, and the trailing shield includes a second magnetic film, wherein a magnetic permeability of the first magnetic film is lower than a magnetic permeability of the second magnetic film.

According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a main magnetic pole having a trailing side and two lateral sides, a magnetic shield near the trailing side and both lateral sides of the main magnetic pole, the magnetic shield comprising: a first soft magnetic film with a relatively high saturation flux density positioned facing depthwise from a floating surface side thereof, a second soft magnetic film with a relatively low saturation flux density, and a first non-magnetic film. The head also includes a non-magnetic film interposed between the magnetic shield and the main magnetic pole, a first magnetic film magnetically coupled to the magnetic shield and the main magnetic pole on a side opposite a floating surface side thereof, and a coil surrounding a magnetic circuit, the magnetic circuit comprising the main magnetic pole and the first magnetic film. According to one embodiment, a magnetic head for perpendicular recording includes a main pole, a first soft magnetic film disposed on a trailing side of the main pole, and a first nonmagnetic film interposed between the main pole and the first soft magnetic film. A thickness of the main pole is increased in a depth direction from an air bearing surface using an inclination, and a thickness of the first nonmagnetic film increases in the depth direction from the air bearing surface. In another embodiment, an angle from a horizontal plane of an upper surface of the first nonmagnetic film is greater than an angle from a horizontal plane of a lower surface of the first nonmagnetic film in contact with the main pole. A perpendicular magnetic recording head according to one embodiment includes a main pole; first magnetic films arranged on both sides of the main pole in a track width direction via nonmagnetic films; and a second magnetic film arranged on a trailing side of the main pole via a nonmagnetic film; wherein the depths of the first magnetic films from an air bearing surface are smaller than the depth of the second magnetic film from the air bearing surface at least at a periphery of the main pole. Embodiments of the present invention help to suppress broadening of a write field of a main pole of a perpendicular recording head and realize high-quality write operation. According to one embodiment, a main pole of a write head extends to an air bearing surface or a medium-facing surface and has an inverted trapezoid in cross-section. First soft magnetic films called side shields are separately disposed through a nonmagnetic film on both sides of the main pole. The air bearing surface side end of the first soft magnetic film is provided to recede from the air bearing surface. The first soft magnetic film and the main pole are formed in the same layer. A second soft magnetic film called a trailing shield is provided above the main pole on the air bearing surface side via a nonmagnetic film.

According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a shield having a groove and a main magnetic pole positioned in the groove of the shield. The groove includes a bottom side near a leading edge of the shield and inclined sides extending from the bottom side toward a trailing edge of the shield and from an ABS side of the head to a recessed side of the shield opposite the ABS. The shield is coupled to a non-magnetic layer at the recessed side, a cross-sectional area of the groove is less at a position nearer to the substrate than a position farther from the substrate, a cross-sectional area of the groove is less at a position nearer to the ABS side of the shield than a position farther from the ABS side of the shield, and a portion of the sides of the groove have curved surfaces.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head having a grooved wrap around shield and method for manufacturing the same

Embodiments of the present invention help to provide a perpendicular magnetic recording head capable of writing a signal in a track having a small width. According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes an auxiliary pole, a main pole, a yoke, a coil, a first soft magnetic film and a second soft magnetic film. The yoke is in contact with the main pole. The coil is wound around a magnetic circuit composed of the auxiliary and main poles and the yoke. The first soft magnetic film is provided on both sides of the main pole with a non-magnetic film provided between the first soft magnetic film and the main pole. The second soft magnetic film is provided on the trailing side of the main pole with the non-magnetic film provided between the second soft magnetic film and the main pole. The first and second soft magnetic films are two types of plated magnetic films. One type of the plated magnetic films have respective thicknesses of 0.5 nm to 20 nm and respective body centered cubic lattice crystal structures. The other types of the plated magnetic films have respective thicknesses of 0.5 nm to 20 nm and respective face centered cubic lattice crystal structures. The two types of the plated magnetic films are alternately laminated with four or more layers. This can achieve the magnetic disk drive capable of reducing a possibility to erroneously delete a signal after the signal being written and preventing degradation of characteristics of a high frequency signal.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head and method for manufacturing the same

Embodiments of the present invention provide a magnetic shield composed of size-controlled small crystal grains and provide a more after-write read noise free thin film magnetic head. According to one embodiment of the present invention, an upper magnetic shield uses a multi-layered magnetic film formed by alternately stacking a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline magnetic thin layer and a body-centered cubic (bcc) crystalline magnetic thin layer by plating. The plating bath is such that the temperature is 30&#xb1;1&#xb0; C., pH is about 2.0&#x2212;1.0 to 2.0+0.5, metal ion concentrations are about 5 to 25 (g/l) for Niand 5 to 15 (g/l) for Fe, saccharin sodium concentration is about 1.5&#xb1;1.0 (g/l), sodium chloride concentration is about 25&#xb1;5 (g/l), and boric acid concentration is about 25&#xb1;5 (g/l). Each layer's crystal structure is different from that of its upper and lower layers, which results in size-controlled small crystal grains since the epitaxial growth is broken. Since crystal grains are reduced in size, it is possible to suppress the after-write read noise and therefore attain a read head which allows recording at higher frequencies.
