A module inserted/withdrawn into/from a mounting device and latched by the mounting device upon insertion, in which a tab disengages a latch with the mounting device by being pulled in the withdrawing direction, a case has an opening on both sides and supporting the tab, a nail goes in/out of the openings of the sides in the inserting direction of the case to engage a latch with the mounting device, a metal fitting is held in a ditch structure provided in the case, and the metal fitting has a hole for loosely engaging a projecting portion provided in the tab in a plate member thinner than a length of the projecting portion and converts a force component in the withdrawing direction applied to the tab through the hole into a force component in a direction substantially perpendicular to the withdrawing direction to displace the nail, thereby disengaging the latch with the mounting device.

The invention provides an optical waveguide structure suitable for use, for example, with a wavelength division multiplex transmission system for optical communication, which can be produced by a simple process and realizes a wavelength separation action of a high performance with a reduced propagation loss of light without provision of a gap between waveguides. The optical waveguide structure includes a first optical waveguide, a second optical waveguide including a pair of optical waveguides, and an intermediate optical waveguide for connecting the first optical waveguide and the second optical waveguide to each other. The intermediate optical waveguide is capable of propagating light of a high order mode therein.

A Mach-Zehnder optical modulator with an output light monitoring function whereby emitted light from the modulator is monitored for controlling a DC bias voltage applied between a first and a second electrode provided on a first and a second branch optical waveguide. The end face of the waveguide substrate on the output side is obliquely formed and an optical waveguide is provided on the waveguide substrate for taking out reflected light from the output end face as monitor light. A photodetector for detecting the monitor light is attached to the side face of the waveguide substrate. By such arrangement, the length of the waveguide substrate can be made shorter than that in the prior art. As an alternative, such an arrangement may be made that a double refraction crystal for separating monitor light is attached to the end face on the output side of the waveguide substrate and a prism for correcting optical path is attached to the double refraction crystal.
