A tape winding apparatus includes: a rotating device configured to rotate a wind-up core for winding a tape into a roll which defines a tape roll; a push roller configured to be pressed against the tape roll, the push roller contacting with and rolling on an outer periphery of the tape roll at a tape feeding position where the tape is fed onto the tape roll; a feeding direction control guide arranged upstream from the push roller as viewed in a running direction of the tape and configured to control a tape-feeding direction of the tape that is fed onto the tape roll; and a movement device configured to move at least one of the push roller and the feeding direction control guide such that the tape-feeding direction conforms with a tangential direction of the tape roll at the tape feeding position.

To manufacture a perpendicular magnetic recording-type magnetic tape having a servo signal written therein by a write head having a magnetic gap, a perpendicular direct-current erasing step in which a magnetic tape is magnetized in one direction that is one of two opposite thickness directions of the magnetic tape is performed before a signal writing step in which a servo signal is written in the magnetic tape by outputting a pulsed signal to the write head.

In a servo writer, a write signal generator circuit is configured to output a signal for writing a servo signal to a servo write head disposed to allow a magnetic tape to slidably contact therewith and configured to write the servo signal thereon, and a plurality of tape guides are configured to guide the magnetic tape supplied from a supply reel to the servo write head and to a take-up reel. The plurality of tape guides include a first tape guide disposed to contact with the magnetic tape at a position directly upstream of the servo write head and a second tape guide disposed to contact with the magnetic tape at a position directly downstream of the servo write head. Each of the first and second tape guides includes a guide roller rotatably supported by an air bearing and having a diameter of 19 mm or greater.

A servo signal in which a magnetic pattern composed of a first portion magnetized in one direction that is one of two opposite thickness directions and a second portion magnetized in a direction opposite to the one direction is repeatedly arranged in a longitudinal direction of the tape at predetermined intervals is read out and a waveform of the servo signal is acquired from the readout servo signal. In the acquired waveform of the servo signal, a unit waveform having a pair of peaks of opposite polarities corresponding to the magnetic pattern appears periodically. A crest or trough portion of the waveform containing one of the peaks located rearwardly in the tape transport direction in a time of writing the servo signal is selected from the unit waveform contained in the acquired waveform of the servo signal. Tracking control or servo signal verification is performed based on the selected portion.

A recording current to be supplied to a magnetic head is regulated by a signal output control unit. A peak value (either of positive-going peak value and a negative-going peak value) is detected in each pulse of a digital signal resulting from analog-to-digital conversion of a servo signal recorded on a servo band of a magnetic tape. The peak value is transmitted as an input value which is allowed to follow a change in the peak value as long as a frequency calculated based upon times of detection of respective peak values is below a predetermined frequency. An output value of the recording current is determined based upon the transmitted input value.

Servo writer, signal output control method and manufacturing method of magnetic tape using the signal output control method

An apparatus for transporting a magnetic tape includes a writing head, a unit for generating pulse signal, a reading head and a unit for calculating transport speed. The writing head has at least two parallel and linear magnetic gaps spaced a predetermined distance in a tape transport direction. The unit for generating pulse signal cyclically sends a pulse signal to the writing head to write a magnetic pattern corresponding to the magnetic gaps on the magnetic tape. The reading head detects the magnetic pattern to generate a resulting pulse signal. The unit for calculating transport speed calculates a transport speed of the magnetic tape based on the pulse signal sent by the reading head. The unit incorporates a first time interval which is obtained from two parallel and linear pattern components within a magnetic pattern, and a second time interval obtained from adjacent magnetic patterns.

The background magnetic flux transition zone is generated with one directional polarization of the magnetization along the servo bands on the magnetic recording tapes. The servo stripes are generated with the reverse polarity of magnetization in the background magnetic flux transition zone. Then the magnetic flux servo transition against the background has more contrast so that the detected servo signal which is differential signal can be maintained in a high level.

A magnetic tape of the present invention comprises a plurality of servo bands and servo signals for performing tracking-control of a magnetic head, wherein the servo signals are recorded on the servo bands, wherein a DC magnetization region magnetized in one direction by direct current is arranged along longitudinal directions of the magnetic tape on the servo bands, wherein each of the servo signals is magnetized in a reverse direction for the one direction of a DC magnetization and is recorded within the DC magnetization region, and wherein any of a relative ratio and relative difference of DC magnetization intensity in the DC magnetization region and recording magnetization intensity of each of the servo signals differs for each of the servo bands.

A tape surface strain inspecting apparatus which optically inspects a surface of a tape and surface strain of the tape is characterized by being provided with a light emitting device emitting a light on the surface of the tape and forming a linear image which slants at a predetermined angle for a tape width direction of the tape, an image taking device taking the image formed on the surface of the tape, an image inspecting means investigating an edge linearity of an image taken by said image taking device, and a strain discriminating means discriminating largeness of surface strain of the tape based on an inspection result by the image inspecting means.
