The objective of the present invention is to provide a fluidized bed incinerator which will increase the thermal capacity of the freeboard to respond to fluctuations of the load imposed by waste matter such as sludge or garbage with a high moisture content; which would absorb local and momentary temperature spikes due to load fluctuations or variations in the characteristics of the waste material. This invention comprises the steps of 1) injecting the primary air for fluidizing the fluidizing medium from a bottom of the fluidizing region; 2) injecting the secondary air into the splash region in which the bubbles on the surface of the fluidized sand blast and the particles are propelling upward when the bubbles are burst; 3) entraining and conveying upward the fluidizing medium to out of said incinerator via the freeboard; 3) recirculating the fluidizing medium to the fluidizing region; and 4) controlling the thermal capacity of the freeboard, and the temperature of the fluidizing medium to be constant by controlling the ration of the primary and secondary air.

The object of this invention is to provide an ash-melting furnace which can respond to fluctuations in the load and which will be capable of highly efficient and stable operation. In an ash-melting furnace which heats and melts the primary ash and the fly ash obtained by combustion together, this invention is characterized by supplying the primary ash (ash containing rough particles) from upper end of the furnace to form an upper layer of a two-tiered layer of ash, supplying the fly ash (ash containing minute particles) from an upper end of the furnace to form a lower layer of the two-tiered layer of ash, moving the two-tiered layer together towards the far end of the furnace, and heating and melting the two-tiered layer by a burner to form molten slugs during the moving step. When the burner is an oxygen-enriched burner, this configuration makes it possible to control the volume of oxygen to be added to the burner air (including changing the density of the oxygen). This invention can control not only the volume of fuel but also the density of the oxygen-enriched air and the volume of the ash to be supplied in response to the state of flow of the molten ash melted by the oxygen-enriched burner.

A method of preventing dust from adhering to a wall of a combustion apparatus, such as a furnace wall or exhaust duct, is carried out by forcing gas through a porous refractory member forming the wall. Specifically, the furnace wall or exhaust duct wall to which dust might otherwise adhere is made of a porous refractory member and gas is injected through the pores of the refractory member. In an incinerator, the refractory porous member extends around the periphery of a liquid injection nozzle, so that gas fed to the inside of the incinerator through the refractory porous member prevents flower from accumulating at the periphery of the end of the nozzle and attenuates the wake of the injected liquid so as to suppress the entrainment of dust in the liquid. In a melting furnace, the refractory porous members provide the ceiling of a slag separating chamber and the entrance of an exhaust gas duct open to the upper portion of the slag separating chamber. Plate-like members form wind chambers with the porous refractory members so that cooling gas fed into the wind chambers is forced into the slag separating chamber and exhaust duct through the pores in the refractory porous members.
