Provided is a water heater including a burner that receives a supply of combustion air from a fan, a heat exchanger having a heat transfer tube, and a combustion chamber case in which a combustion chamber of the burner is formed in the interior thereof and which is to be capable of guiding combustion gas generated by the burner to the heat exchanger. The water heater further includes a unit case that surrounds the combustion chamber case, and a region on the outside of the combustion chamber case within the unit case serves as an air pressure chamber having a higher pressure than the combustion chamber. Thus, combustion gas leakage to the outside can be prevented or suppressed appropriately by means of a simple configuration.

An electro-magnetic pumpdisposed in the feed canalserves to compress the fuel towards the nozzle, and an injector valveis disposed in the return canal. A low rate at which the fuel is sprayed out from the nozzle is controlled by a controlling meansby regulating the mode of opening and closing the valve bodyof injector valve

A combustion apparatushas an anti-spreading memberdisposed below a combustion chamber. This anti-spreading memberis composed of a generally cylindrical main body, an outer flangeand an inner flange, these flanges being formed at and integral with the opposite ends of the main body, respectively. A controllerfor regulating the operation of this apparatusis designed to preheat the anti-spreading memberat a heat generation rate 'q' lower than the required heat generation rate 'Q', before the apparatus starts its normal operation to burn a fuel.
