Provided is a storage system and a data management method of a storage system enabling system-wide data deduplication. The storage system has a plurality of storage apparatuses in which one or a plurality of logical volumes are provided. Based on data information of data obtained through the generation of a request to write to a logical volume in the storage system, one storage apparatus among the plurality of storage apparatuses calculates, for a plurality of combinations of storage apparatus and logical volume in the storage system, a data capacity when duplicate data is removed for each of the storage apparatuses, calculates the total of the calculated data capacities as the total capacity of the whole storage system, and performs optimal arrangement arithmetic processing to output information indicating a combination with the smallest total capacity among the plurality of combinations.

Storage system and data management method of storage system

The file storage system of the present invention comprises a first server including a first file system (FS), and a second server including a second FS. The first and second servers respectively store first and second difference management tables. Upon receiving a write request, the first server stores a difference of a first file in the first FS, updates the first difference management table, and sends, to the second server, a difference storage notification showing that the difference of the first file has been stored in the first FS. The second server receives the difference storage notification, and updates the second difference management table.

In tiered storage subsystems in which pages are automatically allocated to appropriate storage media based on the access frequency in page units, since the number of storage media is not simply proportional to the performance, it was difficult to design in advance a tier configuration satisfying the required performance. According to the present invention, a cumulative curve of I/O distribution is created based on a result of measurement of I/O accesses performed to the storage subsystem, and RAID groups (RG) are allocated sequentially in order from RGs belonging to tiers having higher performances to the cumulative curve of I/O distribution. When either a performance limitation value or a capacity of the RG exceeds the cumulative curve of I/O distribution, a subsequent RG is allocated, and the process is repeated so as to compute the optimum tier configuration.

Three or more file storage apparatuses and a management computer coupled thereto construct a file storage system. The management computer stores therein migration path management information, which indicates a configuration of a migration path capable of including three or more file storage units arranged in a cascade form, and path history information, which indicates a change history of the configuration of the migration path. Each time when the configuration of the migration path is changed, the management computer updates the migration path management information to information that indicates the changed configuration of the migration path, and adds the information that indicates the changed configuration of the migration path, to the path history information.

The first storage apparatus includes a transmission unit for sending to a host computer, if data rearrangement in a volume is executed, a data transmission switching request for switching the transmission destination of write data, and a rearrangement unit for rearranging data in the volume. The host computer includes a data transmission switching unit for switching, after receiving the data transmission switching request from the transmission unit, the transmission destination of the write data from a first virtual volume in the first storage apparatus to a second virtual volume in a second storage apparatus. The rearrangement unit rearranges data in the first volume after the data transmission switching unit switches the transmission destination of the write data from the first virtual volume in the first storage apparatus to the second virtual volume in the second storage apparatus.
