In a servo writer for recording a servo signal on a running tape is provided, a guide member provided near a head, and the guide member includes a surface guide provided to guide a surface of the running tape and an edge guide including a plurality of contact portions to guide an edge of the running tape. Among distances between adjacent contact portions of the plurality of contact portions of the first edge guide, at least one distance is different from another distance.

A head support structure of the present invention is the head support structure for recording/reproducing a servo signal on a magnetic tape, comprises a base portion and a support arm, which is one-side supported at the base portion and provides a head provided position-adjustably at a free end for the magnetic tape, and provides a support portion for supporting the free end of the support arm for the base portion.

A magnetic tape cutting system having a storage unit for storing positional information of defect portions of a whole roll of magnetic tape and a winding apparatus for playing out magnetic tape from the roll and winding the magnetic tape as a product. A defect removal apparatus plays out magnetic tape from the whole roll for purposes of disposal. A control unit selects, based on the positional information of the defect portions in a selected roll of magnetic tape, the winding apparatus or the defect removal apparatus. The apparatus that is not currently selected is available to process another roll of magnetic tape while the selected roll of magnetic tape is being processed in the selected apparatus.

A splicing method comprising the steps of: (a) holding a first tape on a first tape guiding portion and a second tape guiding portion which are positioned in alignment with each other; (b) cutting the first tape between the first tape guiding portion and the second tape guiding portion so as to allow a first end portion held on the first tape guiding portion and a second end portion held on the second tape guiding portion to be formed in the first tape; and (c) splicing one of the first end portion and the second end portion to a second tape, wherein a step (d) of detecting whether or not at least one of a portion of the first tape being held on the first tape guiding portion and a portion of the first tape being held on the second tape guiding portion is in a predetermined holding position is effected prior to step (c), and when the at least one is in the predetermined holding position, step (c) is effected. Accordingly, it is possible to dispense with inspection of an acceptable or unacceptable state of spliced portions of the first tape and the second tape.
