The invention has an object to improve easiness and certainty of the mounting operation of an air bag lid onto an opening of an instrument panel, and upon expanding operation of the air bag, increase the opening area of the air bag lid opening so as not to prevent expansion of the spreading air bag in the passenger compartment. A lid bracket 34 is connected to an air bag lid 15. The air bag lid 15 is secured through the lid bracket 34 to a panel bracket 32 provided on the back of the instrument panel 11 from the surface side of the instrument panel 11. Then, an air bag module body 12 is secured to the panel bracket 32 from the back side of the instrument panel 11. Further, collars 19 pierced with engagement holes 20 on the back thereof are provided on the air bag lid 15. Insertion spaces 36 for insertion of collars 19 and setup claws 37 for engagement in the engagement holes 20 of collars 19 inserted into the insertion spaces 36 are formed in the lid bracket 34.

Air bag apparatus for vehicle

An air bag cover (21) is provided which covers an air bag device and consists of a core layer (23) made of hard resin and a skin layer (22) made of soft resin. The air bag cover (21) has a lid (21a) cracked and opened by actuation of the air bag device. The lid (21a) has cracked-open portions (26) along which the lid (21a) is cracked by pressure generated when the air bag is inflated and a hinge portion (24) on which the lid (21a) is opened and by which the lid (21a) is held. The hinge portion (24) has hinge holes (22a) through which the soft resin of skin layer (22) flows onto the back surface of the core layer (23). A method of molding the air bag cover (21) takes first and second stages. In the first step, after a pair of molds are clamped, molten hard resin for a core layer (23) is injected into a cavity of one of the molds. The hard resin is cooled and hardened to form the core layer (23). In the second step, after the molds are opened, a core die component (35c) of the mold used in the first step is moved and brought into contact with a cavity die component (35b) of the other mold. Thereafter, molten soft resin for a skin layer (22) is injected into a space between the core layer (23) formed on the core die component (35c) and the cavity die component (35b) in order to form the skin layer (22).

Automotive air bag cover and method of molding same

A vehicular air bag installation arrangement for a passenger includes an instrument panel having an elongated recessed compartment formed therein. The recessed compartment includes a front side open to a front side of the instrument panel and dimensioned to act as a unit case for an air bag module. The air bag module is sub-assembled and includes a base member shaped to act as a bracket within the recessed compartment, an inflater mounted within the base member and an air bag, which is folded in front of the inflater, and includes two extending edge portions wrapped around the outside of the base containing the inflater. The extending edge portions include bolt holes that engage weld bolts projected from the outer side of the base member. The weld bolts are then used to mount the base member within the recessed compartment.

Adaptable vehicular air bag installation arrangement

A passenger-side airbag device includes a container divided into a bag storage area and an inflator storage area. The perimeter of the inflator storage area is smaller than the perimeter of the bag storage area to create a shelf in the container to support an uninflated airbag. A rim around an opening of the airbag is attached to the container using a plurality of resiliently deformable resin clips. A shaft connecting the container to a pocket in the airbag rim is optionally added for greater support when the airbag is inflated.
